Shelley Marshall’s HOLD MOMMY’S CIGARETTE
Mar 10 @ 2:00 pm

This is a stunning story of an unfiltered life, written and performed by Shelley Marshall of Bear River and directed by Linda Kash. It took 10 years for Hamilton-born Marshall to create the work, the worthwhile result of resilience, recovery, and reflection while exploring many the genres of performance; clown, stand-up, improv, buffoon, and play.

The response has been spectacular, touching people so deeply that audiences have lined up over a hour to share their own stories with her. It’s been described as raw and sweet, funny and heart-breaking all at once, an emotional romp from heart-wrenching to gut laughing. “She had you in the palm of your hand from the opening scene”, said one patron, while another said “Shelley Marshall was so brilliant! It really is very emotional to watch her story come to life. But the fact it could be so bloody funny as well?”

For five years, old Mommy’s Cigarette was been a sold-out success in theatres in Toronto and surrounding cities, receiving Gold in the category of “Best Theatre Production” in 2013, “Best New Discovery” by Now Magazine, and nominated “Best Female Stand Up” in Canada by the Canadian Comedy Awards. Marshall has hosted the popular, televised Hamilton Music Awards for the past four years.

In light of the national acclaim she has garnered, what makes Hold Mommy’s Cigarette such a success to Shelley personally is the attention it has contributed in raising mental health awareness. “I knew creating works of art that expressed my experience, my truth, and my understanding, were what would bring a joyful purpose to my life. I feel I not only have an opportunity, but an obligation, to convey a message that can help people heal.” Quickly blazing an uncharted trail, this comedic icon won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Marshall, who has recently settled in Bear River, Nova Scotia, invites you to come to her show with an open mind and promises you’ll leave with a full heart.

ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND
Mar 29 @ 7:00 pm

We are delighted to welcome YOUNG COMPANY PRODUCTIONS back to the King’s Theatre stage with an original production of Lewis Carroll’s classic story, ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND.

“Curiouser and curiouser”. And so begins Alice’s journey into Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland of entertaining encounters with a veritable host of bizarre creatures from a Dodo, Mock Turtle, dancing lobsters, and of course the White Rabbit and the March Hare. Young Company Productions is delighted to be back with a fresh and original adaptation of this well-loved and classic tale.

YCP has already brought forth the thought provoking and challenging ‘Mind-Shift’ presentation last spring, and on Canada Day the troupe had wowed audiences with their evocative production of ‘Shakespeare by The Shore’ at the Oqwa’titek Amphitheatre. Now they’re back and bigger than ever, rising to the challenge of bringing to life “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, this time on the main stage of Annapolis Royal’s King’s Theatre for three performances March 29, 30, and 31st.

Co-directors Linda Hulme-Leahy and Simon Bonnington are thrilled to be working with the cast of 29 keen and eager young thespians. And with their new adaptation, taken straight from Carroll‘s original text, they have free reign to craft the production for our local stage.

We very much hope you’ll enjoy the show. And if you don’t? “Off with their heads!”

CHASE PADGETT’s NASHVILLE HURRICANE
May 2 @ 7:30 pm

The rise, demise, and resurrection of the best damn guitar player you’ve never heard of; the Nashville Hurricane.

During the course of this 75 minute one man masterpiece the audience learns about Henry Waltrip (the Nashville Hurricane) from his humble trailer park beginnings alongside his white trash mother, Brenda to the crazy gigs on the road with his blues playing mentor, Tyrone. The stories and songs unfold into hilarious rants on love and music, a riveting tale involving the dark side of show biz, and blazing guitar work any audience is sure to rave about such as the finale; a one man acoustic ‘Devil Went Down to Georgia.’

A Curious Tale of Fingerpickin’ Fury

40 years ago a mysterious acoustic guitarist appeared from nowhere, conquered the music industry, and vanished without a trace… until now. Chase Padgett becomes a manager, a mother, a mentor, and the guitar prodigy himself as each one tells their side of the rise, demise, and resurrection of the best damn guitar player you’ve never heard of; the Nashville Hurricane.

THE PAPER BAG PRINCESS: THE MUSICAL
May 11 @ 7:00 pm

Action packed and filled with live music, singing, audience interaction, and adventure around every corner, this fun adaptation is a perfect fit for family audiences.

The Paper Bag Princess is an international classic. First published in 1980, written by famed Canadian author Robert Munsch, it is still one of the most popular children’s stories with over four million copies printed.  We are thrilled to be producing not only the story, but A MUSICAL! Book, music and lyrics by Joe Slabe (original concept Tara Blue), this adaptation is packed full of singing, live music and so much character, presented by TO BE DETERMINED THEATRE COMPANY.

At a time when gender stigma and stereotypes have become the forefront of conversations around the world we are so excited to bring this story to life again. A young female who utilizes resilience, resourcefulness, independence and compassion is the hero we are glad to be sharing with students this coming year. This classic tale has become more than just a fun bedtime story. It is a poignant reminder of the ideals we want reflected in our society and championed by the next generation!
