BEAUTIFUL BOY
Apr 30 @ 7:30 pm

Following his breakoutrole in Call Me By Your Name, Academy Award/Golden Globe nominee Timothy Chalamet turns in another dazzling performance in Beautiful Boy.

Playing a young man raging and suffering through drug addiction, he confirms his status as one of the very best actors of his generation. He is matched every step of the way in this moving drama by Steve Carell, who continues to build on his comic achievements with powerhouse dramatic turns in Foxcatcher, The Big Short, and most definitely here. David Sheff (Carell) is a kind, loving, middle-class dad. He and his wife, Vicki (Amy Ryan), seem to have done everything right for their family. So when son Nic (Chalamet) gets addicted to methamphetamine, David can’t believe it, can’t stop it, and can’t help but risk everything to try to get his son back. As he grapples with Nic’s lies, betrayals, and constant flirtations with death, the film reminds us of who Nic used to be – a sweet, thoughtful, beautiful boy.

Adapting the bestselling books that David Sheff and Nic Sheff wrote about their experiences, Belgian director Felix van Groeningen brings both realism and poetry to a tragically timely story. As the Sheffs confront the intractable, unpredictable beast of addiction, they must at the same time confront the fact that Nic’s pain might also be his choice. Beautiful Boy doesn’t shy away from the harsh reality of this family’s struggle, but frames it with a surprising amount of life, love, and hope.

Directed by Felix van Groeningen

Starring Steve Carell, Timothy Chalamet, Maura Tierney, Amy Ryan
“Beautiful Boy could hit home for many families. Carell provides strong ballast in a thankless role as a father bewildered by the incremental loss of his beloved son to addiction. Chalamet is elusively liquid in the role of a child who sabotages his life without ever really being able to express why.”

Padgett plays manager, mother, mentor, and the guitar prodigy himself. Blazing guitar work and a riveting tale about the dark side of show biz.

———————————————–

A Curious Tale of Fingerpickin’ Fury

40 years ago a mysterious acoustic guitarist appeared from nowhere, conquered the music industry, and vanished without a trace… until now.

During the course of this 75 minute one man masterpiece the audience learns about Henry Waltrip (the Nashville Hurricane) from his humble trailer park beginnings alongside his white trash mother, Brenda to the crazy gigs on the road with his blues playing mentor, Tyrone. The stories and songs unfold into hilarious rants on love and music. A one man acoustic ‘Devil Went Down to Georgia”.

Chase Padgett becomes the manager, the mother, the mentor, and the guitar prodigy himself as each one tells their side of the rise, demise, and resurrection of the best damn guitar player you’ve never heard of; the Nashville Hurricane.

WOMAN AT WAR
May 7 @ 7:30 pm

Featuring an environmental activist modestly taking on the world, one electric pylon at a time. Halla (Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir) is a popular 49-year-old choir director, her sun-filled smile warming everyone she meets. But behind the scenes of a quiet routine, she leads a double life as a passionate environmental activist. In the countryside, she’s what the press have nicknamed “Mountain Woman,” an anonymous figure using a potent bow and arrow to bring down power lines in a one-woman crusade against heavy industry. But right as she begins planning her biggest and boldest operation yet, she receives an unexpected letter that changes everything.

“Is there anything rarer than an intelligent feel-good film that knows how to tackle urgent global issues with humor as well as a satisfying sense of justice? Look no further than Woman at War.”

THE PAPER BAG PRINCESS: A MUSICAL
May 11 @ 5:00 pm

Note earlier start time of 5:00pm!!

Action packed and filled with live music, singing, audience interaction, and adventure around every corner, this fun adaptation is a perfect fit for family audiences.

The Paper Bag Princess is an international classic. First published in 1980, written by famed Canadian author Robert Munsch, it is still one of the most popular children’s stories with over four million copies printed.  We are thrilled to be producing not only the story, but A MUSICAL! Book, music and lyrics by Joe Slabe (original concept Tara Blue), this adaptation is packed full of singing, live music and so much character, presented by TO BE DETERMINED THEATRE COMPANY.

At a time when gender stigma and stereotypes have become the forefront of conversations around the world we are so excited to bring this story to life again. A young female who utilizes resilience, resourcefulness, independence and compassion is the hero we are glad to be sharing with students this coming year. This classic tale has become more than just a fun bedtime story. It is a poignant reminder of the ideals we want reflected in our society and championed by the next generation!

May 20 @ 7:00 pm
Come sing with Coco Love Alcorn and her bassist Connor Walsh!
For 2 hours Coco will teach songs, lead improvisation exercises, and demonstrate how non-scary and fun singing together can be! We will make some joyful noise and soulful sounds as we playfully jump into the middle of the moment together.

Coco’s workshops create a space safe for challenging our comfort zones and enjoying a truly connected experience. Together we will explore harmony, groove, blend and our creative sides.

“Since releasing Wonderland (fall 2016) I have had the joy of visiting and singing with dozens of choirs across Canada and beyond. It all started in the fall of 2014 when I uploaded a video to YouTube singing a song I had just written called “The River”. Within months, choirs had started singing this song and I hadn’t even stepped into the studio yet!

I knew that I wanted to visit and sing with as many of these choirs as possible. And so I have been, and loving every minute of it: To show up in each new town and be immediately embraced by a community of people who sing together is an incredible thing. I have always loved to sing for people, but to sing with them is an even greater joy. I have found a new passion and my new calling. If I haven’t met you yet, I would love to!” – Coco

MARIA BY CALLAS
May 21 @ 7:30 pm

Maria by Callas captures one of the great talents of the 20th century, combining beautifully restored archival footage with her own words. The Greek-American soprano rose to fame after World War II and became a star attraction in all the major opera houses. The film features interviews Callas gave during her lifetime, including a candid conversation with David Frost, her infamous performance cancellation in Rome and her falling out with the Metropolitan Opera leader Rudolf Bing. She expresses her regrets and shares her feelings about her long love affair with Aristotle Onassis that lasted after his marriage to Jackie Kennedy. Callas’s music is paramount in the film. We’re treated to her signature arias from the operas Norma, La Traviata, Carmen, and Tosca. As Callas told Frost, “If someone really tries to listen to me, he will find all myself there.”

JAMES MULLINGER – Comedy
May 25 @ 7:30 pm

British comedian James Mullinger has taken Canada by storm. Sold out shows across the country, appearances on CBC’s The Debaters, movies, TV shows, festivals, awards, magazines, stand up specials – since moving to Atlantic Canada four years ago he’s done it all.

James tours extensively to packed houses across Canada and England. A big budget movie had been made about his early years in stand up (starring actors from Twilight, Downton Abbey and Notting Hill and comedians such as Jimmy Carr, Gilbert Gottfried, Mike Ward and Pete Zedlacher). It was described by NME as the “funniest film of the year,” “unmissable” by GQ Magazine and “essential viewing. A funny, realistic look at what it takes to become a stand up comedian,” by the Montreal Times. Watch the trailer here.

James is one of the Canada’s biggest cheerleaders. He loves it here and spends his time promoting it across the world and raising money for charities and non-profits. James has raised more than $100,000 for Canadian charities.
