CHASE PADGETT’s NASHVILLE HURRICANE
May 2 @ 7:30 pm

The smash hit one-man theatrical masterpiece comes to King’s! Chase Padgett is a virtuoso musician-actor-comedian who tells the tale of a mysterious acoustic guitarist who conquered the music industry and vanished without a trace.

Padgett plays manager, mother, mentor, and the guitar prodigy himself. Blazing guitar work and a riveting tale about the dark side of show biz.

———————————————–

A Curious Tale of Fingerpickin’ Fury

40 years ago a mysterious acoustic guitarist appeared from nowhere, conquered the music industry, and vanished without a trace… until now.

During the course of this 75 minute one man masterpiece the audience learns about Henry Waltrip (the Nashville Hurricane) from his humble trailer park beginnings alongside his white trash mother, Brenda to the crazy gigs on the road with his blues playing mentor, Tyrone. The stories and songs unfold into hilarious rants on love and music. A one man acoustic ‘Devil Went Down to Georgia”.

Chase Padgett becomes the manager, the mother, the mentor, and the guitar prodigy himself as each one tells their side of the rise, demise, and resurrection of the best damn guitar player you’ve never heard of; the Nashville Hurricane.

“If this isn’t worth 75 minutes of your time than I don’t know what is.” – Houston Press

When the bank is about to repossess his childhood home after he misses several payments, his sister Jane (Emily Mortimer) helps him search through their father’s papers for the shares they own in the bank.

SHARKWATER: EXTINCTION
May 10 @ 7:30 pm
Late filmmaker and conservationist Rob Stewart’s last documentary is a thrilling exposé on the illegal shark-fin industry and a rousing call to save an imperiled animal from the edge of extinction.

Sharkwater Extinction is a work of galvanizing activism rendered with heart and soul, and the final film from Rob Stewart, the award-winning Toronto documentarian, photographer, and conservationist.

Building on the research, passion, and sometimes daredevil first-person investigative work of 2006’s Sharkwater, Sharkwater Extinction updates and expands on the fight by Stewart and others to halt the hunting of sharks, which are often killed just for their fins. Since the release of Sharkwater and the growing awareness it helped foster, shark finning has been banned in most of the world. Yet these magnificent creatures — one of the world’s oldest and most important predators — are in more danger than ever, due to a thriving pirate industry, legal loopholes, and widespread corruption. Over 100 million sharks (yes, you read that right) are killed every year. The world’s shark population has decreased by 90 percent in the last 30 years. An entire species — and a cornerstone of our ecosystem — hangs in the balance.

Completed by the production team after Stewart died while making the film in January of 2017, Sharkwater Extinction takes us to Costa Rica, Cape Verde, the Bahamas, Panama, and the US to explore the myriad ways sharks continue to be placed in peril.

The film’s gorgeous imagery lures you in, while its nerve-wracking scenes of Stewart risking his life to expose hunters keeps you riveted. But the beauty of this film lies in Stewart’s enduring sense of wonder. He said he made these films to make people fall in love with sharks, and that he did. Stewart will be greatly missed.

THE PAPER BAG PRINCESS: A MUSICAL
May 11 @ 5:00 pm

Note earlier start time of 5:00pm!!

Action packed and filled with live music, singing, audience interaction, and adventure around every corner, this fun adaptation is a perfect fit for family audiences.

The Paper Bag Princess is an international classic. First published in 1980, written by famed Canadian author Robert Munsch, it is still one of the most popular children’s stories with over four million copies printed.  We are thrilled to be producing not only the story, but A MUSICAL! Book, music and lyrics by Joe Slabe (original concept Tara Blue), this adaptation is packed full of singing, live music and so much character, presented by TO BE DETERMINED THEATRE COMPANY.

At a time when gender stigma and stereotypes have become the forefront of conversations around the world we are so excited to bring this story to life again. A young female who utilizes resilience, resourcefulness, independence and compassion is the hero we are glad to be sharing with students this coming year. This classic tale has become more than just a fun bedtime story. It is a poignant reminder of the ideals we want reflected in our society and championed by the next generation!
