MONET: THE MAGIC OF WATER & LIGHT – Reel Art 2019
Jan 21 @ 7:00 pm

A documentary on the massive work of Monet and the story that led him to revolutionize Modern Art.

Monet – the Magic of Water and Light tells the story of the origin of a massive work of art that broke with convention, of an artist resurrecting his life only thanks to painting. His human endeavor defied both space and conventions in his timeless masterpieces. In a war-torn country, the undisputed genius of French Art disrupted the art world and changes it forever. As the end of the First World War drew near it became clear to Monet that his work of art could not but be his final legacy to France: a symbol of peace, hope, and resistance, in a battered and bloody world. This is the tale of an obsession with light and water the painter could not escape from and how he transformed it into a kind of magic. A tale of the radical elements that revolutionized Modern Art: Monet’s clear intent was to transfer onto canvas the “first, pure impression” of forms and objects as they appear to the eye that has never seen them before. And this documentary will show the Water Lilies by Claude Monet, as they have never been seen before. A unique, exclusive look at the masterpieces housed at the Orangerie Museum, the Marmottan Museum, the Orsay Museum and Giverny, for the first time ever on the big screen for an unrepeatable experience.Inspired by the international bestseller Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies (2016) written byRoss King, also featured in the film.

DEGAS: PASSION FOR PERFECTION – Reel Art 2019
Feb 4 @ 7:00 pm
From The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge EXHIBITION ON SCREEN journeys from a superb exhibition at The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, whose extensive collection of Degas’ works is the most representative in Britain, to the streets of Paris. With exclusive access to view rare and diverse works, this film tells the fascinating story of Degas’ pursuit for perfection through both experimentation with new techniques and lessons learnt from studying the past masters. Sometimes frustrated by his own failings, Degas was consumed by obsessive principles and failing eye sight but his determination to capture everyday life was evident in every mark he made. Never fully satisfied, many of Degas’ drawings and sculptures were kept in private during his lifetime but, now through close examination, they can be seen as some of the most beautifully detailed and expressive works in the modern era. Using written accounts by friends and commentators, and the narration of letters written by Degas himself, this film reveals a more complex truth behind one of the most influential French artists of the late 19th-century and serves as an exploration of the complex workings of Degas’ artistic mind. “Art is not a matter of what you see, but what you make other people see.” Edgar Degas

PERSON OF INTEREST – Melody A. Johnson
May 18 @ 7:30 pm

“Melody A. Johnson proves once again, she is the kook supreme of the Canadian stage…I truly would pay money to see Johnson read the phone book…” – Richard Ouzonian, The Toronto Star

Award-winning, celebrated actor and writer Melody A. Johnson returns with the same Miss Caledonia team for her new solo show Person Of Interest, a comedy drama told as a 70-minute story.

Typecast as a “housebound loser”, Person of Interest is the mostly true story of an actor driven to the brink by neighbours from Hell.  Audiences who have enjoyed catching the wave of stand alone storytelling (NPR’s The Moth, CBC’s Vinyl Cafe), will crave the yarn spinning, dark tale that is Person of Interest. Told simply and skillfully, it is a comic journey of a good neighbour gone bad will strike a chord with anyone who has ever lived, loved, and battled with the people next door.

Johnson has performed across stages in both Canada and the United Kingdom with her acclaimed Miss Caledonia, (2014 TOURING ARTIST OF THE YEAR, 2013 Dora award nomination for  both Best New Play, and Outstanding Actress).

Critics rave over Person of Interest…
“Endearingly Puck-like, full of energy, mischief and irreverence for the mundane, but genuinely wanting to get along, she weaves this sometimes shocking tale of neighbourhood warfare with candour and an edgy sense of fun. “

“…expertly written and performed by the undeniable Melody Johnson…extremely clever with some unique jokes and anecdotes…”” – Cathy McKim, Life With More Cowvbell

“The performance is seamless. Johnson powers through with not an ounce of apprehension. It’s very cool to watch…a fun, quirky and clever night of theatre…”  – Jennifer, Enchin, Mooney on  Theatre

“…Johnson is a great eccentric comedienne… “
-Robert Cushman, The National Post
