THE DEATH OF STALIN
Jul 24 @ 7:30 pm

The one-liners fly as fast as political fortunes fall in this uproarious, wickedly irreverent satire from Armando Iannucci (Veep, In the Loop). Moscow, 1953: when tyrannical dictator Joseph Stalin drops dead, his parasitic cronies square off in a frantic power struggle to be the next Soviet leader. Among the contenders are the dweeby Georgy Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), the wily Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi), and the sadistic secret police chief Lavrentiy Beria (Simon Russell Beale). But as they bumble, brawl, and backstab their way to the top, just who is running the government? Combining palace intrigue with rapid-fire farce, this audacious comedy is a bitingly funny takedown of bureaucratic dysfunction performed to the hilt by a sparkling ensemble cast.

“The Death Of Stalin is superbly cast, and acted with icy and ruthless force by an A-list lineup. There are no weak links. Each has a plum role; each squeezes every gorgeous horrible drop.” ––– The Guardian

Shelley Marshall’s HOLD MOMMY’S CIGARETTE
Aug 11 @ 7:30 pm

This is a stunning story of an unfiltered life, written and performed by Shelley Marshall, directed by Linda Kash. It took 10 years for Hamilton-born Marshall to create the work, the worthwhile result of resilience, recovery, and reflection while exploring many the genres of performance; clown, stand-up, improv, buffoon, and play.

For the past five years, old Mommy’s Cigarette has been a sell-out success in theatres in Toronto and surrounding cities, receiving Gold in the category of “Best Theatre Production” in 2013, “Best New Discovery” by Now Magazine, and nominated “Best Female Stand Up” in Canada by the Canadian Comedy Awards. Marshall has hosted the popular, televised Hamilton Music Awards for the past four years. In light of the national acclaim she has garnered, what makes Hold Mommy’s Cigarette such a success to Shelley personally is the attention it has contributed in raising mental health awareness. “I knew creating works of art that expressed my experience, my truth, and my understanding, were what would bring a joyful purpose to my life. I feel I not only have an opportunity, but an obligation, to convey a message that can help people heal.” Quickly blazing an uncharted trail, this comedic icon won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Marshall, who has recently settled in Bear River, Nova Scotia, invites you to come to her show with an open mind and promises you’ll leave with a full heart.

PORT CITIES
Aug 25 @ 7:30 pm

In the brief period of time since Port Cities unleashed their incendiary debut—a wildly self-assured collection of sparkling, rootsy pop that showcases the Nova Scotia trio’s devotion to songwriting—the band’s been hard at work bringing it to the masses. They’ve continued to explore and evolve their ambitious pop sound, melding diverse musical backgrounds to create an alchemy that’s part art, part songwriting science, and all magic: the nimble dynamism of Breagh MacKinnon’s smoky, jazz-indebted delivery, Dylan Guthro’s simmering and soulful R&B swagger, and Carleton Stone’s razor-sharp, romantic rock ‘n’ roll. Their music is a mix of unforgettable melodies and high-flying harmonies with an electrifying heart.

With five Nova Scotia Music Awards, a SOCAN #1 Award (for “Back to the Bottom”), and stints at #1 on CBC and Spotify chart, Port Cities is set to reach audiences worldwide.
