VAN GOGH: Of Wheat Fields & Clouded Skies
Sep 22 @ 7:00 pm

Van Gogh: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies

Masterpieces from the Kröller-Müller Museum

SPECIAL FEATURE PRESENTATION

Doors open at 6pm for Wine & Popcorn. Reserve Seating available.

On Saturday September 22, King’s Theatre introduces a new kind of program called “Special Feature Presentation”. These are special, limited release films that are being presented with reserve seating options and “Wine & Popcorn” one hour before the show. First up is a “VAN GOGH: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies”.

Van Gogh is a huge favourite amongst King’s Theatre audiences. This feature is a new look at the Van Gogh legacy through the world’s largest private collection, that of Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939). In the early 20th Century, she bought nearly 300 of his works, paintings and drawings.

The story unfolds with a woman who identified with Van Gogh’s spiritual torment, and came to buy priceless artistic treasures. The collection is set in the naturalistic and architectural beauty of the vast De Hoge Weluge park.
It tells the parable of the painter’s life, using passages from his brother Theo’s letters to set the pace of the exhibition, and it shows images of the places he lived and stayed in, from Paris to Provence.

This collection and of the burning passion for art that led to it offers an outstanding window into the life and art of Van Gogh. ‘Amid wheat fields and clouded skies’ brings together 40 paintings and 85 drawings from the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Holland, now home to Helene’s heritage.

The feature tells us about Van Gogh’s art and his genius, and allows us to understand the importance of drawing as part of his artistic technique. His seemingly instinctive canvases were the result of long, preparatory studies, not sketches but complete works of art in themselves, where the broken flow of lines that characterizes the style of his paintings can already be found.

Doors open at 6pm for Wine & Popcorn. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the box office at 902-532-7704

The release will also will be accompanied by 15 minutes of cinema-exclusive, never-before-seen extras in the form of studio footage of John and his band (including George Harrison) performing ‘How Do You Sleep?’ and ‘Oh My Love’, also mixed in Dolby Atmos and 5.1, as well as a up-close-and-personal version of ‘Oh Yoko’ filmed during John and Yoko’s ‘bed-in for peace’ in the Bahamas.

THE CHILDREN ACT
Oct 2 @ 7:30 pm

Adapted by Booker Prize–winning author Ian McEwan from his own novel, this riveting drama stars two-time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson (The Legend of Barney Thomson; Alone in Berlin) as a British High Court judge tasked with making a decision that will speak to our most fraught questions regarding religious tolerance — and could mean life or death for an innocent young man. Judge Fiona Maye (Thompson) is married to her work, which has become a problem for her husband, Jack (Stanley Tucci, Spotlight), who announces that he wants to have an affair. Treating the matter more as an annoyance than a life-altering crisis, Fiona kicks Jack out and focuses on her current case. The question: should a couple who are Jehovah’s Witnesses be permitted to deny a life-saving blood transfusion to their leukemia-stricken 17-year-old son (Fionn Whitehead, Dunkirk)? Fiona finds herself taking unusual measures to determine her verdict — measures that will have far-reaching consequences.

Directed by Richard Eyre (Notes on a Scandal), The Children Act brims with intelligence, sophistication, and intrigue. The elevated tension places unusual focus on its protagonist’s every word and gesture — a challenge Thompson meets with virtuosity. Her Fiona is a cauldron of conflicted feelings bubbling beneath a veneer of composure. As she finds herself sliding deeper into a mire of professional compromise and personal desperation, we come to empathize with her singular burden… and wait for the outcome with keen anticipation.

Oct 5 @ 7:00 pm

Location: Oqwa’titek Amphitheatre

It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights, it’s time to meet the Muppets!

To celebrate, King’s Film Society is presenting a re-mastered version of the classic The Muppet Movie , the first full-length film about how Kermit the Frog and friends got their start. Released in 1979, the film features Paul William’s indelible songs and score –The Rainbow Connection, Movin’ Right Along and many more – which won Best Children’s Album at the Grammys in 1980.

As for the plot . . .

While living the quiet life in a swamp, Kermit the Frog is approached by a Hollywood agent and asked to audition for the chance of a lifetime. So Kermit, hoping for his big break, makes the journey to Hollywood. Along the way, he comes across several quirky new friends including the comedic Fozzie Bear, the beautiful and feisty Miss Piggy and the Great Gonzo. But Kermit must also watch out for the ruthless Doc Hopper, who plans to use him as his spokesman for his Frog Legs food chain.
