With two EP’s in their back pocket as Carli & Julie Kennedy, these sisters came into 2015 making a splash in the Canadian country music scene, releasing their debut LP as Twin Kennedy, which earned them two Canadian Country Music Award nominations, a Western Canadian Music Award nomination for Producer of the Year, and two Vancouver Island Music Award wins for Song of Year and Country Recording of the Year. But in 2017 he’ll be sharing the spotlight with his earliest musical influence- his father, Bill.

The album is a powerful collection of original and traditional songs, reflecting the duo’s individual journeys and personal politics.

From the introspective opening track, Dragonfly, a song about a paranormal experience that Joel had, to On Down the River, Bill’s closing track about leaving his home in England, the album is grounded in folk music but informed by rock and roll history.

Solidarity is a surprising and unique album, full of strong guitar playing and thoughtful, accessible songs. An excellent addition to the Plaskett catalogue and hopefully the first of many for the Plasketts.

DAVID GILMOUR Live at Pompeii

45 years after Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour filmed ‘Live At Pompeii’ in the legendary Roman Amphitheatre there, he returned for two spectacular shows, part of his year-long tour in support of his No.1 album ‘Rattle That Lock’. The performances were the first-ever rock concerts for an audience in the stone Roman amphitheatre, and, for two nights only, the 2,600 strong crowd stood exactly where gladiators would have fought in the first century AD.

‘David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ is an audio-visual spectacle, featuring lasers, pyrotechnics and a huge circular screen on which specially-created films complement selected songs, but paramount above all is the astonishing music and stellar performances from an all-star band. The show includes songs from throughout David’s career, as well as many Pink Floyd classics, including ‘One Of These Days’, the only song that was also performed at the band’s 1971 show.

Both concerts also saw very special performances of ‘The Great Gig In The Sky’ from ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’, which David rarely plays as a solo artist. This concert performance film includes highlights from both shows, filmed in 4k by director Gavin Elder.  ‘David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ shows an artist at the top of his artistic game, performing incredible material with his world-class band, in a unique setting, on one very special occasion.

Songs include the title tracks of his two most recent No. 1 solo albums: Rattle That Lock and On An Island, as well as other solo and Pink Floyd classics, including Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb.

The cinema project is fully endorsed by David Gilmour who will support across his marketing channels: 2.5m fans on Facebook, 42.5k followers on Twitter, 105k followers on Instagram The project will also receive exposure through the official Pink Floyd channels including their Facebook page of 29m fans.

ALEX CUBA

Alex Cuba is a Latin Grammy/Juno winner, singer-songwriter who is not tied to tradition; Alex has a vast musical vision. His sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and powerful guitar riffs, relinquish a conventional stereotype that exemplifies much of the Latin music landscape. Collaborating with artists such as: Nelly Furtado, Juan Luis Guerra, Juanes and Ron Sexsmith, just to name a few.

Born Alexis Puentes in Artemisa, Cuba, was immersed in music at a very young age. Being in the family business since the early age of 4. This is when he joined his father (respected guitarist and teacher Valentin Puentes), and a group of 24 guitarists in a performance aired on Cuban national TV. Alex then went on to study guitar and bass.

In 1999, Alex moved to Vancouver, B.C where he recorded an album titled “Morumba Cubana” alongside his twin brother Adonis, as The Puentes Brothers. Alex then went on to record his solo debut album “Humo De Tobaco” in which earned him a Juno award for World Music Album of the Year in 2006. In 2007, Alex released “Agua Del Pozo” which also earned him another Juno award for World Music Album of the Year in 2008. From there, Alex released his third album, a self-titled project “Alex Cuba” in 2009.

The album features his first ever English track titled “If You Give Me Love”. The album gained great recognition on an international level. In 2010, Alex took home the award for Best New Artist at the 2010 Latin Grammy Awards, where it was also nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Album. It also followed a nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards and in 2011 Alex took home a BMI Latin Award for his songwriting on Nelly Furtado’s #1 Spanish hit “Manos Al Aire”.

In 2012, Alex released his fourth album “Ruido En El Sistema”, which Alex received his second Socan Hagood Hardy Award for outstanding achievement in Jazz and World Music. He also won his second Latin Grammy Award – this time as a songwriter. Alex alongside his co-writer Yoel Henriquez received the award for Best Tropical Song for the single “Toma Mi Vida” from Milly Quezada’s album Aqui Estoy Yo. In 2013 He again brought home a Latin Grammy for the  video Eres Tu from Ruido En El Sistema, a video produced entirely in his hometown of Smithers.

Songwriting was the focus for the latest album “Healer” that was recorded in New York,  USA and Victoria, Canada. Using a live rhythm section the songs take on a live appeal and Alex traded in horns for guitars and vocal harmonies that take Alex back to his roots. There are five duets with singer-songwriters, five being Canadian, Ron Sexsmith, David Myles, Alejandra Ribera and Kuba Oms as well as New Yorker Anya Marina, who he met on a songwriting retreat in Tulum Mexico. It is an upbeat, acoustic soul album full of optimism and reality as Alex always has a silver lining on melancholy of any form.

Still based in Smithers, Alex Cuba has put together a four piece band of Ian Olmstead on Bass, Jake Jenne on Drums and Jose Sanchez on percussion. Ian and Jake, both from Smithers have known Alex since their high school years and Cuban expat Jose has toured previously supporting the album Agua del Pozo. Coming together for this latest project highlight the songs with lots of melody, groove and vocal harmonies.

Sanctuary is a musical trio based in Halifax. They have established a unique form of contemporary music that is rich, intense and lyrical. Much of their music is based on Gregorian chant but that is merely a point of departure –they transcend these ancient materials using improvisation, contemporary music and extended techniques, to create a new form of contemplative plainsong for the 21st century.

Together, bass clarinetist Jeff Reilly, cellist Christoph Both and organist Peter-Anthony Togni have developed and refined a unique sound of immense dynamic and tonal range. The members of Sanctuary are dedicated to live performance and the trio re-defines accepted traditions of presentation, making a Sanctuary concert a unique contemplative experience.

SARAH HAGEN – Classical Piano

Canadian pianist Sarah Hagen has performed in concert halls and has been heard on broadcasts throughout North America and Europe. Awarded as the British Columbia Touring Council’s 2015 Touring Artist of the Year, and mentioned by The Guardian (Charlottetown) as the Best Classical Performance of 2014, her interpretations have been described as “outstandingly inventive” [University of Waterloo Gazette], ”played flawlessly” [ReviewVancouver] and “with great sensitivity and heart.” [Vernon Morning Star]

A visionary and an idealist, Sarah presents conceptually innovative performances, involving photography, dance and spoken word. She is Artistic Director for Pro’ject Sound, a performance project involving live piano with large-scale projected images. Her collaboration “Exultation” with Canadian Slam Poetry Champion Brendan McLeod explores Rachmaninoff’scomplete Opus 32 Preludes through poetry and storytelling, and premiered to critical acclaim in February 2017.

An avid collaborator, Sarah has performed with cellist Ariel Barnes, violinist Rachel Barton Pine, violist Nicolò Eugelmi, cellist Phillip Hansen, violinist Robert Uchida, tenor Benjamin Butterfield, soprano Barbara Livingston, Trio Accord, Ballet Victoria, the Emily Carr String Quartet, the Bergmann Piano Duo, jazz pianist Søren Bebe, hornist Allene Hackleman, and clarinettist Keith MacLeod, among many others. Sarah has appeared as soloist with the Victoria Symphony under the baton of Mei-Ann Chen, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony conducted by Mark Skazinetsky, the West Coast Symphony Orchestra with conductor Bujar Llapaj, the Symphony Orchestra of the Pacific with conductor Arthur Arnold, and the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra. As a First Prize Winner in the 2013 Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition, Sarah was awarded the opportunity to perform solo at New York City’s Carnegie Hall in May 2013. Her debut solo album, Glass House Dancing, was nominated for Classical Recording of the Year at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards.

Sarah has been been heard nationally on CBC Radio 2’s In Concert in a live recording with violinist Joan Blackman and cellist Ariel Barnes. She was also featured in a live recording and discussion of Schumann’s Papillons on CBC Radio One’s North by Northwest with host Sheryl MacKay. In December 2013 she released her second album, Devoted: Music of Robert & Clara Schumann, featuring solo piano works and Clara Schumann’s Romances, Opus 22 with violinist Martin Chalifour, concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In Helsingborg, Sweden in 2006 she recorded with Swedish cellist Marit Sjödin, creating Concealed Diamonds, an album of masterworks for cello and piano.

Sarah’s primary teachers and mentors have been Jamie Parker, Glen Montgomery, Gregory Chaverdian, and Christine Purvis. She has completed five residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts and enjoyed two terms there as collaborative pianist.

During her years on the west coast of Canada, Sarah founded nine concert series, curating each one individually, and inviting artists from across Canada and around the world to share the stage with her. She has toured throughout Sweden numerous times with cellist Marit Sjödin, violinist Ian Peaston, and Per Johansson, principal clarinet of the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra. Other international concerts of note include a recital at DePaul University with Oto Carrillo, hornist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a performance of Schumann’s Piano Quintet in Darmstadt, Germany with members of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, a performance at Carnegie Hall with Polish flautist Krzysztof Kaczka, and concerts as part of the Schlern International Music Festival in northern Italy.

Sarah premiered her one-woman musical comedy show to critical acclaim in the summer of 2016, touring it to various Canadian fringe festivals. Described as “one of the best hours I’ve ever spent at the Fringe” [The Coast (Halifax)], “Perk up, pianist!” tells the tale of a touringclassical musician remaining optimistic in the midst of challenging and ridiculous situations. Of the show’s debut at the Toronto Fringe Festival, Montreal Rampage wrote, “Hagen reminds us the beauty of how an honest solo performance can make you so easily fall in love with its performer.”

In addition to writing wine reviews for her blog, “ARTIST WINES! – Uncorking musician-priced cellar secrets,” Sarah is an enthusiastic tap dancer. She currently resides in Toronto.

Sarah’s motivation is the belief that music has the power to be a window into our souls, regardless of our age or musical knowledge.

Canadian violinist, Christina Bouey, is hailed by the New York Times for playing “beautifully,” by the New York Post, “When violinist Christina Bouey spun out that shimmering tune, I thought I died and went to heaven,” and by Opera News, for playing “with exquisite, quivering beauty.” Among her awards and prizes include the Grand Prize at the Fischoff Competition, Osaka International Chamber Competition, Hugo Kortchak Award for outstanding achievement in chamber music, Heida Hermann International, Canadian National Music Festival, Queens Concerto Competition, and the Balsam Duo Competition.

Christina has performed as soloist with the Greenwich Symphony, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, River Cities Symphony, Tonkünstler Ensemble, Metro Chamber Orchestra, Bergen Symphony, Prince Edward Island Symphony, Banff Orchestra, Shattered Glass and the Hemenway Strings. Her solo and chamber credits include Carnegie Hall, Esterházy Palace, Yamaha Center Auditorium, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Schneider Series, the Dame Myra Hess series, La Jolla Summer Fest, Emilia Romagna Festival, Harvard Club of New York, Montreal Chamber Festival, Kansas International Music Festival and the Indian River Festival. She has also been featured on WQXR New York. Christina has collaborated with artists such as Jeremy Denk, Paul Coletti, Lynn Chang, Steven Doane, Rosemary Elliott, David Geber, Clive Greensmith, Joji Hattori, Nicholas Mann, Irina Muresanu, and Bright Sheng.

Christina graduated from Manhattan School of Music (2013) with a Professional Studies Certificate in Orchestral Performance, studying with Glenn Dicterow and Lisa Kim as a full scholarship student, (2012) with a Professional Studies Certificate, studying with Laurie Smukler, and in 2011 she received a Master of Music, while studying with Nicholas Mann. Her Bachelor of Music (Magnum cum laude) is from The Boston Conservatory; where she studied with Irina Muresanu as a full-scholarship student.

In June 2014, as part of the 150 year celebrations on PEI, professional dancers from Ballet Jazz de Montreal performed a modern dance to her first compositional commission for solo violin, with Christina playing it on the violin. Christina is currently serving as concertmaster of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, and is a member/founder of the Ulysses String Quartet. She plays a 1900 Scarampella on generous loan from the Canada Council Instrument Bank.

Pierre-André Doucet, piano

Praised for his colourful playing and fascinating writing, pianist and author Pierre-André Doucet is one of Canada’s most captivating young artists. Mr. Doucet premiered with Symphony New Brunswick in 2007, under maestro Airat Ichmouratov, and has since performed with several orchestras in Quebec and South Africa. An engaging chamber musician and collaborative pianist, he recently won a position in the inaugural Lincoln Center Stage piano quintet aboard the MS Koningsdam, a collaboration between the Lincoln Center of New York and Holland America Line.

In addition to having been heard on Radio-Canada, Espace musique, and CBC Radio’s Next! series, Mr. Doucet has also been featured on CBC Radio 2’s list of 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30. Furthermore, recent musical projects have seen him perform across Canada, as well as to Austria, France, Germany, South Africa, Spain and the United States.

Winner of the prestigious Knigge Piano Competition, the Auditions Jeunes Artistes de Radio-Canada and the Atlantic Young Artist Competition, Mr. Doucet has also been a prize-winner at the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto Career Development Award Competition, the National Music Festival, the Canadian Music Competition, and the CFMTA National Piano Competition. His evocative and compelling readings of contemporary scores also make him a refreshing and vital musician, and have seen him awarded the Best Performance of Contemporary Music Prize at the Ibiza International Piano Competition, the Best Performance of a Canadian Work Prize at the Prix d’Europe, as well as the Dorothy Buckley Prize for the Interpretation of Canadian Music. In fact, his ardent work in disseminating new music have led him to premiere works by Canadian composers J. Mitchell Burke, Richard Gibson, Pierre Michaud and Jared Miller, Cuban composer Evelin Ramon, American composers Mark Carlson and Libby Larsen, and South African composer Hendrik Hofmeyr.

Mr. Doucet recently completed doctoral studies in piano performance at l’Université de Montréal, where he studied with Maneli Pirzadeh . Previously, he studied with Richard Boulanger at l’Université de Moncton. He has received financial support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (Joseph-Armand Bombardier Graduate Scholarship), the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the New Brunswick Arts Council.

Mr. Doucet has also perfected his craft and performed at the Tanglewood Music Center, Music Academy of the West, the Franz-Schubert-Institut, the Tuckamore Chamber Music Festival, the Orford Festival, the Gijòn International Piano Festival, the Internationaler Klaviersommer Bad Bertrich, Opera on the Avalon, the Vancouver International Song Institute and as recipient of a Stern Fellowship at Songfest. Through these experiences, he has benefited from masterclasses with such eminent artists as Marc Durand, David Jalbert, Robert Koenig, Robert MacDonald, John Perry and Paul Stewart (piano), and Elly Ameling, John Churchwell, Helmut Deutsch, Julius Drake, Margo Garrett, Kenneth Griffiths, Linda Hall, Andrew Harley, Robert Holl, Marilyn Horne, Kayo Iwama, Rudolf Jansen, Graham Johnson, Warren Jones, Kiri Te Kanawa, Martin Katz, Jonathan Kelly, Laura Loewen, Christa Ludwig, Carrie-Ann Matheson, Michael McMahon, Francis Perron, Rena Sharon, Alan L. Smith, Cameron Stowe, Sanford Sylvan, Liz Upchurch, Dawn Upshaw, Roger Vignoles, Howard Watkins and Robin Wheeler (vocal piano).

As a writer, Pierre-André Doucet has been awarded the Antonine Maillet-Acadie Vie Literary Award for Kilométrage (Prix Volet jeunesse Richelieu). His first collection of poetry and short stories, Sorta comme si on était déjà là (Éditions Prise de parole), was shortlisted for the Prix littéraire Émie-Ollivier, and earned him the Discovery of the Year award at the Gala des Prix Éloizes.
