Canadian violinist, Christina Bouey, is hailed by the New York Times for playing “beautifully,” by the New York Post, “When violinist Christina Bouey spun out that shimmering tune, I thought I died and went to heaven,” and by Opera News, for playing “with exquisite, quivering beauty.” Among her awards and prizes include the Grand Prize at the Fischoff Competition, Osaka International Chamber Competition, Hugo Kortchak Award for outstanding achievement in chamber music, Heida Hermann International, Canadian National Music Festival, Queens Concerto Competition, and the Balsam Duo Competition.

Christina has performed as soloist with the Greenwich Symphony, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, River Cities Symphony, Tonkünstler Ensemble, Metro Chamber Orchestra, Bergen Symphony, Prince Edward Island Symphony, Banff Orchestra, Shattered Glass and the Hemenway Strings. Her solo and chamber credits include Carnegie Hall, Esterházy Palace, Yamaha Center Auditorium, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Schneider Series, the Dame Myra Hess series, La Jolla Summer Fest, Emilia Romagna Festival, Harvard Club of New York, Montreal Chamber Festival, Kansas International Music Festival and the Indian River Festival. She has also been featured on WQXR New York. Christina has collaborated with artists such as Jeremy Denk, Paul Coletti, Lynn Chang, Steven Doane, Rosemary Elliott, David Geber, Clive Greensmith, Joji Hattori, Nicholas Mann, Irina Muresanu, and Bright Sheng.

Christina graduated from Manhattan School of Music (2013) with a Professional Studies Certificate in Orchestral Performance, studying with Glenn Dicterow and Lisa Kim as a full scholarship student, (2012) with a Professional Studies Certificate, studying with Laurie Smukler, and in 2011 she received a Master of Music, while studying with Nicholas Mann. Her Bachelor of Music (Magnum cum laude) is from The Boston Conservatory; where she studied with Irina Muresanu as a full-scholarship student.

In June 2014, as part of the 150 year celebrations on PEI, professional dancers from Ballet Jazz de Montreal performed a modern dance to her first compositional commission for solo violin, with Christina playing it on the violin. Christina is currently serving as concertmaster of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, and is a member/founder of the Ulysses String Quartet. She plays a 1900 Scarampella on generous loan from the Canada Council Instrument Bank.

Pierre-André Doucet, piano

Praised for his colourful playing and fascinating writing, pianist and author Pierre-André Doucet is one of Canada’s most captivating young artists. Mr. Doucet premiered with Symphony New Brunswick in 2007, under maestro Airat Ichmouratov, and has since performed with several orchestras in Quebec and South Africa. An engaging chamber musician and collaborative pianist, he recently won a position in the inaugural Lincoln Center Stage piano quintet aboard the MS Koningsdam, a collaboration between the Lincoln Center of New York and Holland America Line.

In addition to having been heard on Radio-Canada, Espace musique, and CBC Radio’s Next! series, Mr. Doucet has also been featured on CBC Radio 2’s list of 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30. Furthermore, recent musical projects have seen him perform across Canada, as well as to Austria, France, Germany, South Africa, Spain and the United States.

Winner of the prestigious Knigge Piano Competition, the Auditions Jeunes Artistes de Radio-Canada and the Atlantic Young Artist Competition, Mr. Doucet has also been a prize-winner at the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto Career Development Award Competition, the National Music Festival, the Canadian Music Competition, and the CFMTA National Piano Competition. His evocative and compelling readings of contemporary scores also make him a refreshing and vital musician, and have seen him awarded the Best Performance of Contemporary Music Prize at the Ibiza International Piano Competition, the Best Performance of a Canadian Work Prize at the Prix d’Europe, as well as the Dorothy Buckley Prize for the Interpretation of Canadian Music. In fact, his ardent work in disseminating new music have led him to premiere works by Canadian composers J. Mitchell Burke, Richard Gibson, Pierre Michaud and Jared Miller, Cuban composer Evelin Ramon, American composers Mark Carlson and Libby Larsen, and South African composer Hendrik Hofmeyr.

Mr. Doucet recently completed doctoral studies in piano performance at l’Université de Montréal, where he studied with Maneli Pirzadeh . Previously, he studied with Richard Boulanger at l’Université de Moncton. He has received financial support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (Joseph-Armand Bombardier Graduate Scholarship), the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the New Brunswick Arts Council.

Mr. Doucet has also perfected his craft and performed at the Tanglewood Music Center, Music Academy of the West, the Franz-Schubert-Institut, the Tuckamore Chamber Music Festival, the Orford Festival, the Gijòn International Piano Festival, the Internationaler Klaviersommer Bad Bertrich, Opera on the Avalon, the Vancouver International Song Institute and as recipient of a Stern Fellowship at Songfest. Through these experiences, he has benefited from masterclasses with such eminent artists as Marc Durand, David Jalbert, Robert Koenig, Robert MacDonald, John Perry and Paul Stewart (piano), and Elly Ameling, John Churchwell, Helmut Deutsch, Julius Drake, Margo Garrett, Kenneth Griffiths, Linda Hall, Andrew Harley, Robert Holl, Marilyn Horne, Kayo Iwama, Rudolf Jansen, Graham Johnson, Warren Jones, Kiri Te Kanawa, Martin Katz, Jonathan Kelly, Laura Loewen, Christa Ludwig, Carrie-Ann Matheson, Michael McMahon, Francis Perron, Rena Sharon, Alan L. Smith, Cameron Stowe, Sanford Sylvan, Liz Upchurch, Dawn Upshaw, Roger Vignoles, Howard Watkins and Robin Wheeler (vocal piano).

As a writer, Pierre-André Doucet has been awarded the Antonine Maillet-Acadie Vie Literary Award for Kilométrage (Prix Volet jeunesse Richelieu). His first collection of poetry and short stories, Sorta comme si on était déjà là (Éditions Prise de parole), was shortlisted for the Prix littéraire Émie-Ollivier, and earned him the Discovery of the Year award at the Gala des Prix Éloizes.

The Multi-media Hit Performance

Woven around the music of the award-winning Island songwriter, this P.E.I. love-letter stars Gallant himself, and presents his folk, roots and pop music, alongside comedic stories, Island legends, and poignant tales in a multimedia format that utilizes film, and visual works from well-known painter Karen Gallant. This dynamic, energetic show is storytelling at its best and includes Acadian and Celtic numbers that will have you dancing in your seat in celebration of Canada’s cradle on the waves. The colourful spectacle will offer Lennie Gallant favourites such as ‘Peter’s Dream’ ‘Tales of the Phantom Ship’ and ‘Island Clay’ along with new Island-themed songs.

The show stars Lennie Gallant with an amazing supporting band comprised of Sean Kemp (violin), Jeremy Gallant (keyboard and percussion), Jonathan Gallant (backing vocals, drums, percussion and mandolin) and Patricia Richard (bodhran, mandolin, banjo, and vocals). Directed by Jac Gautreau.

BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE

See the legendary BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE in the intimate setting of King’s Theatre for a once in an lifetime experience.

Cree singer-songwriter, activist, educator, visual artist, and winner of countless awards (Oscar, Juno, and Golden Globe, among them).

Often pegged as a folk singer – particularly by past record labels that either failed or were unwilling to see how far ahead of the curve she was – Sainte-Marie never fully fit in with her ’60s contemporaries. While her peers were singing the centuries-old folk ballads she may have adored, her songs sprang from her own imagination and were effortlessly unique.

Her unwavering resilience has rippled across genres and generations, even as Sainte-Marie’s profile in the United States diminished significantly when she was blacklisted in the ’70s. Recognizing the power of her songwriting and activism, the Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon administrations considered her an “artist to be suppressed,” and Sainte-Marie all but disappeared from the US music industry.

Her bold new album, Power in the Blood, begins where it all started more than 50 years ago, with a contemporary version of “It’s My Way,” the title track of her 1964 debut. Its message, about the road to self-identity and the conviction to be oneself, still resonates.  Power in the Blood is a reminder that, five decades on, it is still futile to silence artists or to put Sainte-Marie in any single category. She simply doesn’t fit. Yes, she can inspire you to rise up and take action, but she can just as easily melt your heart with a tender ballad. Go back to “Until It’s Time for You to Go” and you’ll be hard-pressed to say when it was written or for whom. It’s evergreen and, like so much of Sainte-Marie’s work, it’s universal.

“I love words, I love thinking, and I recognize and value the core of a universal idea simplified into a three-minute song,” she says. “What appealed to me in folk music were the songs that have lasted for generations, but I wasn’t trying to be one of those guys. I wanted to give people something original.”

Over the past 8 years Way-To-Go Productions has created and produced seven hugely successful concerts that have performed to sold-out audiences at over 60 theatres across North America. We are extremely proud of our reputation for delivering to Presenters the highest calibre of entertainment with superb musicianship. Our singers and musicians are among the best in the world, playing 16 stringed instruments that thrill audiences.

Leisa Way – Show Creator, Producer and Performer

Born in Kitchener and raised in Sudbury, ON.  Music was a passion for this little girl with the big voice, and by age 16 she had already sang solo concerts for Queen Elizabeth, Terry Fox, Teddy Kennedy, Wayne Gretsky, and been asked to sing the national anthem at the Special Olympics, the Labatt Curling Briar and for a Canada-Russia hockey game!

Her career truly began when director Walter Learning and the late Don Harron discovered her, casting Leisa as “Anne” in Anne of Green Gables at the Charlottetown Festival in PEI.  Leisa played this role for six seasons, including Canada, USA & Japan Tours, taping for CBC Radio, filming for television, a guest appearance on “Front Page Challenge” & three (3) Royal Command Performances.  Since then her career has taken her to more than 50 countries, perfor

ming at major theatres in Canada and the US in roles as varied as Billie Dawn in Born Yesterday; Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow; Guenevere in Camelot; Peter in Peter Pan (Canada and U.S.); I Love You, You’re Pefect, Now Change! (U.S.A. National off-Broadway tour); Magnolia in Showboat; Maria in The Sound of Music; Dave Carley’s Test Drive and Norm Foster’s The Love List (at six theatres from coast to coast), among many others.

Early in her career, Leisa worked as a marketing/publicity person for various theatres in Canada, and these skills were extremely beneficial when she decided to begin producing and creating shows.  Leisa has now created seven hugely successful concerts that have performed to sold-out houses at over 60 theatres across Canada, and she is currently working on her 8th concert, a celebration of the music of legendary Canadian singer/songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot.

Leisa is very proud of her entire team and the fine musicianship of The Wayward Wind Band, and feels privileged to be able to share this music and the incredible stories with audiences.  There is no greater feeling than connecting with an audience, and Leisa is grateful for the opportunity to put smiles on faces and joy in hearts with these concerts.

Bruce Ley – Piano/Guitars/Arranger

Bruce Ley was born in Hamilton where he started his first band, The Pharoah’s and later joined The Rising Sons, and The Brass Union. Bruce has enjoyed a career that spans 4 decades. Bruce worked for CBC Television for many years and was the piano player for The Tommy Hunter Show for 7 years, and for The Ronnie Prophet Show for 8 years. He worked with Don Everly, Chet Atkins, the ‘real’ Dolly Parton, and Brenda Lee, who coincidentally, was mentored years ago by Patsy Cline. As a writer, Bruce wrote music for the children’s TV shows Sesame Street, and Polka Dot Door, among others. He has also written scores for many television dramas and was nominated for a Gemini for best dramatic score. He scored “The Painted Door”, a film that was nominated for an Academy Award. He has made his mark in the blues field, as lead guitarist and singer in the Trouble and Strife Blues Band. Their debut cd won the award for best blues record of the year (Indie Awards 2007). Bruce formed The Bruce Ley Trio along with our bass player Bob Hewus and Leo Pilon on drums. An avid painter, Bruce was recently chosen to display his work at Curiosity House Gallery’s Emerging Artist Exhibit, and will exhibit in a number of galleries this year. Bruce lives in the hills of Mulmur and was recently musical director for Theatre Orangeville’s production of 18 Wheels and Mesa.

Fred Smith – Lead Vocals/Guitars/Banjo/Harmonica

Fred is a versatile musician and singer and is grateful everyday for the many opportunities in his satisfying career. For over 35 years Fred has been performing and has backed names including Del Shannon, Leslie Gore, Chuck Berry, The Drifters, Ben E. King, The Supremes, Sam Moore, Spencer Davis, The Platters, The Fifth Dimension, Peter Noone and The Mammas and the Papas… to name a few!

In the 80’s, Fred started his recording studio in Kitchener, Ontario where he produces his own music, corporate voice-overs, commercial music, radio commercials, bands and singer-songwriters. He has had the pleasure of working with award winning actors in post-production for TV and film. Renowned actors such as Colm Feore, Christopher Plummer, Brian Dennehy, Cynthia Dale and Stephen McHattie have sure made things interesting in his studio. Closer to home, Fred recently performed for Drayton Entertainment in A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, Twist and Shout: The British Invasion and Sorry…I’m Canadian

Bobby Prochaska – Lead Vocals/Bass

Bobby, a native of Toronto, had his life-long love for music fostered early studying voice and piano at The Royal Conservatory of Music. He picked up other instruments along the way, and has enjoyed a versatile career in show business. His own band, Silent C, released an album of original roots-pop-rock, Past Time. Along with arranging and producing, he has also performed with other acts, such as Hank Williams Live 1952, Selena Martin, Jim Clarke, Danny Williams and The Human Statues, and has appeared in concert with The Kitchener/Waterloo Symphony. Bobby has also worked as an actor in film and television, and his roles in theatre have taken him to Broadway and across Canada and The United States. Some theatre credits include: Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, Crazy For You and Jolson (Mirvish Productions), Eighteen Wheels (Theatre Orangeville), Rock and Roll (Warrack Productions), and Blood Brothers (Drayton Entertainment). One memorable moment where his music and theatre careers collided found Bobby onstage as part of an all-star jam that featured Paul McCartney, Dave Edmunds, Ben E. King, The Crickets and members of The E Street Band.

Nathan Smith – Lead Vocals/Fiddle/Mandolin/Guitar

Growing up in North Bay, Ontario, Nathan began playing classical violin at the age of six, all the while being steeped in Irish and Canadian fiddling. He left home to pursue a Bachelor of Music at the University of Ottawa. While studying and playing viola in the University’s string quartet and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, Nathan was also drawn to playing and singing American bluegrass music. After finishing his degree, he recieved a less formal but equally formative education in bluegrass, touring internationally with Ontario band, Hard Ryde, and eventually settled in Toronto to study Jazz and Contemporary Music at Humber College. Soon after, he began singing and playing in his own innovative bluegrass band, The Barrel Boys, who recently released their debut album, Early On. A skilled and versatile performer, Nathan continues to play violin and viola in various orchestras around Ontario, writes and performs his own traditionally inspired original compositions, and performs as a sideman for artists around the big city.

Sam Cino – Drums

Sam comes from a very musical family and has been playing and surrounded by music for most of his life. He studied music at Humber College and has been involved in countless recording projects and performing ensembles over the past 30 years. (Eccodeck, Fiddlestix, King Cobb Steelie, Kinnie Star, plus many more). His music has been used in television and film (CBC, City TV, Fashion Television, Much Music, Musicplus, plus many more). Sam has toured Canada, USA and Europe playing original music. He has also worked with some of the top modern dance companies and as an accompanist including Toronto Dance Theatre, Guelph Youth Dance, and Dance Theatre David Earl. Sam has his own recording/teaching studio in Guelph, Ontario; recording and mixing on many album and television projects. He also plays drums and flute for Yoga classes. Visit his Facebook page

Aaron Solomon – Lead Singer/Fiddle/Banjo/Mandolin/Guitars

Aaron is a world class musician and performer based in the Toronto area. Cape Breton born, his passion for music and fiery fiddling style took root at the age of two when he asked for his first fiddle. He has been wowing audiences ever since as an energetic singer, actor and multi-instrumentalist mastering an astonishing variety of styles having performed with diverse artists such as Shania Twain, Big Sugar, Jeff Healey, Jason McCoy, George Hamilton IV, Mac Wiseman and many others. He has also performed on over 300 recording sessions besides working as a record producer. Recently, his Celtic rock band, Coole Park released their first album, Water Journeys.

Randall Kempf – Lead Singer/Bass

The early 60’s found a young Randall sliding down the water pipe from his second story bedroom at night, trumpet slung over his back, to play Dixieland at the Riverside Tavern where “Fats” the bartender, a larger than life retired Mississippi River Boat banjo player with the toes cut out of his shoes, enchanted him with stories, songs and a shoebox full of old picture postcards, and passed the torch of traveling down life’s musical highway. It led him through Rock’n’Roll in Chicago, R&B in Oklahoma, to the folk/country scene in Canada. A thirty year musical association with Sylvia Tyson which continues with &Quartette& – (he just returned from a tour); Radio, TV and live concerts in Europe and North America allowed him the chance to sing and play with such greats as Buffy St. Marie, George Strait, Johnny Paycheck, and Emmylou Harris.

In musical theatre, he has given over 1,000 performances of “Pump Boys and Dinettes” and “John Grey’s Rock and Roll”. In 2007, he toured the Appalachian States with the Barter Theatre of Virginia’s production of “Man of Constant Sorrow” taking the lovely, mournful Bluegrass music of the Stanley Brothers as re-popularized by the movie, “O Brother, Where Art Thou”… Back to the places of its birth, including Mayberry, NC and Hazard, KY.

He once had lunch with Harold Bradley, who played tic-tac bass on most of the Patsy recordings.

Bob Hewus – Bass

A resident of the beautiful Hockley Valley, near Orangeville, Ontario, Bob has been playing bass on stage and in the orchestra pits of Toronto theatres for over 25 years. He has lived through over 50 professional productions, including 3 years in the original Canadian production of Forever Plaid. He has worked with some of Canada’s finest musical directors, musicians and performers in shows like Closer Than Ever, Stan Rogers – A Matter of Heart, Company, and Leslie Arden – A Meeting of Minds.

Besides theatre work, he has recorded and performed with many jazz groups, Toronto area Big Bands and singer song-writers.

Daniel Barnes – Drums (You Give Me Fever)

Daniel Barnes, was born in Toronto in 1965, began his career singing and drumming with The Micah Barnes Band for club, concert and TV appearances. His work in Jazz, World and Popular idioms is well documented haveing contributed to JUNO nominations or wins with Joe Sealy, Richard Underhill and The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. He has toured internationally with Canada’s Holly Cole and Jane Bunnett but most extensively with African singing star Aster Aweke (“The Aretha Franklin of Ethiopia”). Both of Daniel’s self produced Jazz CDs “Culmination” (2003) and “Classic Beauties” (2007), are heard across the nation on the CBC and are favourites at JazzFM in Toronto. He was subsequently nominated for Drummer of the Year at The National Jazz Awards in both years. His quartet has performed at International Jazz Festivals (Toronto and Montreal, among others), and was broadcast from an in studio performance on TV Ontario. He is currently developing a global Jazz sound with The Daniel Barns Groove Trio.

Danny McErlain – Piano (You Give Me Fever)

One of the busiest players in Toronto, pianist Danny McErlain brings craftsmanship, versatility, and a sensitive touch to every setting, from an intimate house party to the stage of Carnegie Hall. Choosing to serve the song and the occasion has won him favour in many circles – Jazz, Classical and the Theatre. Musicians praise his adaptability and extensive repertoire; singers his accompaniment for its elegance and nuance. A musical director and arranger, Danny conducts two Toronto area choirs, the Queen’s Park Civil Service Choir and The Ambiance Singers, and provides rehearsal piano and accompaniment for a wide range of artists. He tours often with Colm Wilkinson and Canadian tenor Mark Dubois. Danny is a frequent choice for private and corporate events, playing solo, in a duo or trio, or as part of a small ensemble. Danny studied Jazz at Humber College and is a grauate of the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Eric St-Laurent – Guitar(You Give Me Fever)

Winner of the SOCAN award for Best Original Composition at the Montreal Jazz Festival and The Best Band Award at the Vienne (France) Jazz Festival, Eric St-Laurent has been featured on over 50 recordings, produced multiple albums, composed scores for short films and theatre, and toured extensively in Europe and Canada. Born and raised in Montreal, Eric studied improvisation in New York before moving to Berlin where he toured with both the big and small names of the German and Scandinavian music scenes. Since returning to Toronto, Eric has recorded and toured with Till Bronner, Dave Liebman, Dave Douglas, Rebekka Bakken, Slide Hampton, Luc de la Rocheliere, Sylvie Paquette, Richard Underhill, David Binney, Jojo Mayer, Carlos Del Junco, Bernard Primeau and represented Canada at the International Guitar Summit in Nice (MIDEM).

Eric Mahar – Guitars/Banjo/Harmonica/Vocals

Born in Stratford, Ontario, and now settled in Bolton, Ontario, Eric is a studied musician and teacher with honours degrees in music and broadcasting from Humber College. He has also studied under acclaimed jazz guitarists Lenny Breau, Ralph Towner, and John Abercrombie. He has been in demand over his long career for his many talents as a guitarist, singer and producer and is known as the “musician’s musician”. Eric has recorded, produced and performed with a multitude of national artists in concert and on T.V. across North America and Europe including: The Mercy Brothers, The Bending the Bows Show, Marie Bottrel, Frank Leahy, Michael Burgess, The Waterloo Symphony, Mac Wiseman, and “new country” sensations Wayward. In the summer of 2000 he was a cast/band member of the theatrical show “Don Messer’s Violin” which played in Prince Edward Island to sold out crowds. He was also a band member with the Shaw Festival.

Nelson Anselmo – Sound Engineer

Nelson is pleased to work once again with the incomparable Leisa Way. Currently a sound designer for Drayton Entertainment, Nelson has managed to work at just about every theatre in Ontario over the past fourteen years. His long and varied career has taken him across the province and back again as both a sound designer and engineer. Past productions include The Importance of Being Earnest (Sudbury Theatre Centre), Beauty and the Beast (Theatre Aquarius), Singin’ in the Rain (Huron Country Playhouse), A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline (Theatre Orangeville), and most recently, Cagney, Country Legends, Sweet Charity, and Dance Legends for Drayton Entertainment. Nelson has now added the role of “Daddy” to his resume, with beautiful daughter, Madeleine and son, Matthew. The pay’s not great and the hours are long, but the fringe benefits are unbeatable. Special thanks to Sir Simon for love, wisdom, and attitude checks.

Ben Malone – Sound Engineer

A Hamilton native and graduate of the Theatre Arts – Technical Production program at Sheridan College, Ben has spent the better part of a decade as a sound engineer, (and occasionally lighting tech!), for concerts, theatre, corporate shows and all manner of live events. Highlights over the years include working on Dancap Productions’ The Toxic Avenger rock musical, touring Canada and Europe with Irish Dance show The Magic of Ireland, as well as working on Niagara Falls’ Winter Festival of Lights. On tour he garnered invaluable experience in a variety of fields, not to mention racking up a load of unforgettable times! Ben relishes the opportunity to work with the top notch gang you see before you both playing and singing, and wishes for you to have as much fun watching the show as he’s having working it.

A TRIBUTE TO PEGGY ARMSTRONG

Join us for an afternoon celebrating Annapolis Royal’s beloved “Playwright-in-Residence” Peggy Armstrong.

For more than 50 years, Peggy has been writing plays which tell the stories of this community.  Several of them have been performed here at King’s, and Peggy was a founding Board Member of the King’s Theatre Society.

Members of the Annapolis District Drama Group and King’s Theatre have come together to prepare a special tribute, which will feature live excerpts from four of Peggy’s best-loved plays. The afternoon will also include some music, images and words, all to say THANK YOU to Peggy Armstrong for all she has given to this community.

The show will be followed by a reception in the lobby.

Voted ‘Folk Band of the Year’ & ’Album of the year‘ at the 2016 Scots Trad Music Awards and twice nominated ‘Best Band’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, this Scottish five-piece band deliver a thrilling and unique brand of contemporary folk music that has earned them international recognition on the world and roots music scene as one of the UK’s most dynamic and exciting bands.

After a whirlwind five years traversing the globe, Breabach are delighted to present their fifth studio album, Astar (tr. distance/journey). Inspired by the people and places they have encountered, iconic venues and festivals performed at and the exciting, at times groundbreaking, collaborations they have been involved in. These experiences have brought new shape to their sound whilst simultaneously strengthening their identity.  Astar is a multicultural celebration, embracing the music of four nations in partnership with their own.

Breabach unite the talent of Calum MacCrimmon (pipes/whistles/bouzouki/vocals), Ewan Robertson (guitar/ vocals), James Mackenzie (pipes/flute/whistles), Megan Henderson (fiddle/vocals/stepdance) and James Lindsay (double bass). Since launching their career as winners of the Open Stage Award at Celtic Connections in 2005 the band have steadily moved from strength to strength, picking up accolades and performing at esteemed events along the way.

 

This tour is part of the Atlantic Presenters Association (APA) and RADARTS’ Canada 150 Performance Series. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Government of Canada. Old Man Luedecke

Not since Loudon Wainwright III has anyone written so honestly, so openly, or with such aching tenderness and good humour about family life. “Saving up for date night so we can have our fight” “The Early Days”. But Luedecke has always insisted on a solid poetic heft in the way he uses words, and highly personal stories are what have always connected him to the universal in his audience. Recording with Tim O’Brien in an intimate setting at home has yielded an album where the songs take the starring role.

Calling to mind the powerful force at the heart of other musical vocal pairings: The Milk Carton Kids, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs, or even Tim O’Brien and his work with Darrell Scott, the combination of Old Man Luedecke’s highly personal songs and infectious old-time banjo and guitar, and Tim O’Brien’s mastery of bluegrass harmony, guitars, mandolin, bouzouki, and fiddle adds up to much more than a simple sum of parts.

DIOMIRA – Dinuk Wijeratne, Nick Halley & Joseph Petric

Dinuk Wijeratne, piano/composer

The Sri Lankan-born, Canada-based composer-performer Dinuk Wijeratne has been described by the Toronto Star as ‘an artist who reflects a positive vision of our cultural future’, and by the New York Times as ‘exuberantly creative’. His boundary-crossing work sees him equally at home in collaborations with symphony orchestras and string quartets, tabla players and DJs, and takes him to international venues as poles apart as the Berlin Philharmonie and the North Sea Jazz Festival.

Dinuk’s 2016 highlights include JUNO and ECMA wins for his string quartet pieces Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems, and his appointment as Composer-in-Residence of Symphony Nova Scotia.

Nick Halley, percussion

Nick Halley is a drummer/percussionist, keyboardist, composer, and conductor. As a drummer and world percussionist, Nick has performed and recorded internationally with a wide range of musicians including James Taylor, Oscar Castro-Neves, Maucha Adnet, David McGuinness & Revenge of the Folk Singers, Concerto Caledonia, Jefferson Hamer & Eamon O’Leary, Old Man Luedecke & Tim O’Brien, the Chris Norman Ensemble, various Paul Halley ensembles, Suzie LeBlanc, Theresa Thomason, Diomira with Dinuk Wijeratne & Joseph Petric, and occasionally the Nick Halley Band.  The recording Barnum Hill (2008) features Nick and his ensemble performing some of Nick’s original compositions.

 

Joseph Petric, accordion

Accordionist, teacher, writer, published author, producer, artistic director, Joseph Petric made his American debut at Washington’s Kennedy Centre in 1986 and his European debut at London’s St. John’s Smith Square. His performances have drawn reviews from the likes of the London Independent, the Washington Post, Toronto Globe and Mail, Chicago Tribune, Berliner Tage, the Boston Globe, Gramophone and the New York Times.

 

 

 

Performing works composed by their JUNO-award winning founder Dinuk Wijeratne, Diomira‘s music explores Dinuk’s hugely diverse cultural influences: from the Persian poetry of Omar Khayyam and the fantastical prose of Jorge Luis Borges, to the sensuality of Flamenco and the intricate rhythms of the Indian Classical tradition.

Formed in April 2011, the trio’s critically acclaimed literary and globally-inspired program was immediately recorded by the CBC and has since enjoyed repeated nationwide broadcast, garnering audience support for a style that balances sublime music-making with virtuosity.

The ‘soul’ of Diomira’s unique sound is the accordion of Joseph Petric. An internationally renowned recording-artist hailed as “an extraordinary performer” by the Boston Globe, Petric toured with Debut Atlantic for the first time in 1990. He returns this year with Diomira as Debut Atlantic’s Encore tour. World percussionist Nick Halley is a fiery talent who moves effortlessly amongst the major drumming traditions. Sri Lankan-born Dinuk Wijeratne, with an established reputation as a prolific creator of genre-spanning projects, leads the group with his striking compositions and remarkable invention at the piano.

After over twenty-five years of performing with her siblings Heather Rankin comes into her own with A Fine Line, her debut solo record. This is Heather Rankin like you have never heard her before, breaking away from The Rankin Family’s signature sound, and forging her own musical legacy with her poetic, intimate original songs, and an eclectic mix of others. A Fine Line is an exploration of the balance between grief and joy, love and loss, and life and death. While the sound is distinctively Heather’s own, songs like “We Walk As One” conjure evocative imagery from the past she shared with her siblings, and with fans all over the world. Other songs showcase a more upbeat and contemporary side of Rankin, like her rendition of Tears for Fears’ 1985 hit “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” which features Hip Hop Artist Quake Matthews. It is a social commentary with a Dance Club vibe. A song like David Tyson’s “Valentine” is a heart-felt love song, poignant in its simplicity, where Rankin’s soaring, angelic voice is all that is needed to hit straight to the heart.

It is clear that A Fine Line is a personal record for Rankin, who co-wrote seven of the eleven tracks with David Tyson. “We Walk As One,” the song that her siblings, Cookie and Jimmy, sing backup vocals for, is the album’s most obviously autobiographical track. It speaks to the idea that, although physically separate, those who love and care about one another, continue to move forward together in spirit. Similarly, “I’ve Got Your Back” expresses a sense of unconditional love and support amid a cold and tumultuous world. “Titantically” is the record’s most poetic and ephemeral, the personification of a violin that is rescued from the wreckage of the Titanic, and ripped from the grasp of the person who loved it most in the world. There is a deeply emotional acknowledgement of an inherent sadness to life in A Fine Line, but what is most prominent is Rankin’s resolve to continue to move forward in spite of it. It’s an impressive feat that one album can include a myriad of songs that are individually so different from one another and yet, they come together to create deeply affecting variations on a common theme. When played separately, each track stands assuredly on its own, revealing different aspects of Rankin’s immense talent and her vibrant, complex perspective on life and music. Taken together, one begins to see rich thematic and lyrical intersections, often between the most disparate songs. She begins with laying out the struggle of the human condition, our quest toward finding, and then living as our authentic selves, and then as the album progresses we are plunged into the depths of that struggle. She leaves us, undeniably, with a pure testament of hope and gratitude.

This is an exciting record and an exciting musical departure for Heather Rankin, who sold more than a million records as part of The Rankin Family, sang backup vocals on Carly Simon’s album The Bedroom Tapes and has been featured on the recordings of such artists as The Chieftains, Johnny Reid and Will Ackerman. Perhaps the most dramatic sense of balance in A Fine Line is Rankin’s own graceful sense of balance between her own musical past, present and future. She harkens back to her childhood in Mabou, Nova Scotia and honours her roots in that community, and in her family, but she does so in her own authentic voice. This voice has been shaped by the Gaelic traditions of her home, and by the years she spent singing the songs of her brothers and sisters, but her voice is set free here, and often euphorically so, in a way previously unheard. Proving eloquent songwriting runs in the family, Rankin takes us to more private places in her lyrics, and this mixture of vulnerability and exhilaration makes for a powerfully compelling record. After more than twenty-five years in the business, A Fine Line suggests that we are only just now getting to know Heather Rankin. She has always been known as the youngest of The Rankin Family, but now, as a solo artist, in some ways, she sounds younger, and more timely, than ever.

We are excited to welcome international artist Measha Brueggergosman back to the King’s Theatre stage!

The show will include holiday tunes, jazz favourites, music from her recent album “Freedom Songs”, and who knows? maybe even some opera! Whatever the mix, we know Measha will lift the lid off the house.

Motivated and hungry for new experiences, Ms. Brueggergosman’s career effortlessly embraces the broadest array of performance platforms and musical styles and genres.

On the opera stage, her recent highlights include Giulietta and Antonia Les contes d’Hoffmann, Elettra Idomeneo, Madame Lidoine Dialogues des Carmélites, Jenny in Weill’s Mahagonny, Emilia Marty Věc Makropulos, Hannah in Miroslav Srnka’s Make No Noise, and Sister Rose in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking while on the concert platform she has worked with the San Francisco Symphony and New World Symphony Orchestras and conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Michael Tilson Thomas, Franz Welser-Möst, Sir Andrew Davis, Gustavo Dudamel and Daniel Harding.

Measha began her career predominantly committed to the art of the song recital and has presented innovative programs at Carnegie Hall, Washington’s Kennedy Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, both the Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, Madrid’s Teatro Real, as well as at the Schwarzenberg, Edinburgh, Verbier and Bergen Festivals with celebrated collaborative pianists Justus Zeyen, Roger Vignoles, Julius Drake, and Simon Lepper.

Her forthcoming highlights include her Australian debut at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and in recital at the Sydney Opera House, a return to the Teatro Real, Madrid and to the Barbican, London with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, as well as performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and Vasily Petrenko.

Her first recording for Deutsche Grammophon, Surprise, includes works by Schoenberg, Satie and Bolcom and is one of the most highly regarded debut albums of recent years. Her subsequent disc Night and Dreams, which features songs by Mozart, Brahms, Strauss, Schubert, Debussy, Duparc and Fauré won several awards and her recording of the Wesendonck Lieder with Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra earned her a Grammy nomination.

Off the stage, Measha is just as active: autumn 2017 sees the release of her memoir (published by HarperCollins); she appears regularly on primetime TV (most recently advocating on behalf of contemporary Canadian literature); and leading Canadian children across the country in song, in celebration of the nationwide campaign for music education.

Measha Brueggergosman champions the education and involvement of new audiences and holds several honorary doctorates and ambassadorial titles with international charities.
