This opera is an extraordinary fusion of sublime melody, vocal challenge, and dramatic power. It examines an ageless and archetypal situation: a powerful woman compromises her ideals for love, only to find herself betrayed by her lover. But equally gripping is her relationship with the younger woman who is the new object of her former lover’s attention and in whom Norma sees both a rival and a second self. The title role demands dramatic vocal power combined with the agility and technique of a coloratura singer. It is a daunting challenge that few can rise to: those who have are part of operatic lore.Soprano Angela Meade and mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton star in the Met’s new production of Norma, reprising their acclaimed 2013 portrayal of the title role and Adalgisa, respectively. Tenor Joseph Calleja is Pollione, Norma’s unfaithful lover, and Joseph Colaneri conducts. Sir David McVicar’s evocative production sets the action deep in a Druid forest where nature and ancient ritual rule.

 

The opera is set in Gaul (France) at the beginning of its occupation by the Roman Empire. Almost all of the characters are druids, members of the Gallic priesthood, the only exceptions being the tenors, both of whom are Romans. It is interesting that the Roman Empire, long depicted in European culture as a civilizing force, is here seen as corrupt and exploitative.

 

Norma is perhaps the archetypal bel canto opera, a style of singing that flourished in Italy in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Its principal features are beauty of tone, legato phrasing, and the delivery of florid ornamentation. The score of Norma is characterized by extraordinary melody punctuated by sharp moments of raw drama. The primary functions of the clear orchestral writing are to move the drama along with vigorous rhythm and to inform certain moments with feeling and emotion.

Creators

Vincenzo Bellini (1801–1835) was a Sicilian composer whose greatest gift was his extraordinary understanding of the human voice. His meteoric career was cut short by his death at the age of 33, shortly after his opera I Puritani triumphed in its Parisian premiere. Felice Romani (1788–1865) was the official librettist of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. A frequent collaborator of Bellini, he worked with the composer on six operas, and also wrote the libretti for Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore and Anna Bolena, among many other works.

Famous acappella and dance group from Zimbabwe

Five part harmonies, a capella, and non-stop dancing, this is one of the world’s most successful world music groups.

Black Umfolosi were formed in 1982 by school friends in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, who named themselves after the Umfolozi Omnyama River in South Africa- to where their ancestors can be traced. In 2009 The Black Umfolosi 5 continue to present their spectacular songs and dances thrilling audiences worldwide with a NEW LINE-UP.

Their performances are energy driven and completely engaging, mixing a great gentleness of spirit and song with an exuberance in dance. Their trademark harmonies mixed with intricate rhythms, clicking and clapping are highlighted during their brilliantly choreographed shows with a full range of movements from subtle to vibrant stomping and leaping! Their famous Gumboot Dances showcase the traditional styles and rituals of the South African mining regions and are a particular crowd pleaser.

The Black Umfolosi 5 also provide workshops and residences in dance, voice, theatre, costume design, poetry, mime and also address various issues affecting society today.

Now in her eighties, Agnès Varda remains the world’s most youthful filmmaker. Her latest nonfiction film is an inspired collaboration with JR, the mysterious French street artist. Like many of Varda’s works, Faces Places is a kind of travelogue in which the wonder of each locale visited is only as potent as the populace whose existence affects it. Their plan is simple: Varda and JR roam from place to place in JR’s truck, which is decorated to resemble a camera. In each place they visit, they meet people — coal miners, cheese makers, a Herculean farmer — and JR creates immense monochromatic portraits of them. Our endearing duo then affixes these portraits to various edifices all over town, quite literally, merging faces with places.

The landscape Varda and JR traverse becomes a visual record of their encounters. Among Faces Places’ most amusing refrains is Varda’s annoyance at JR’s refusal to remove his sunglasses, which she says reminds her of Jean-Luc Godard in the ’60s. The contrast between Varda’s French New Wave cohort, who represents her six-decade legacy, and JR, who embodies her vibrant present, speaks volumes about the scope of this amazing auteur’s durability and persistence of vision.

Montréal-based band from Chad H’SAO has been capturing the hearts of small audiences and large crowds alike since 2001. The band has always been passionate about sharing its unique blend of modern sound and traditional African musical influences. H’SAO has traveled the world, delivering electrifying performances, launching three innovative albums and, most of all, developing a musical signature that spans several genres and thus transcends the “world music” category.

At first, voices–but what voices!–were their only instrument. Then, brothers Caleb (guitar), Mossbass (bass) and Izra L (keyboard) along with their childhood friend Dono (drums) added musical instruments to their rich and inspired compositions. Today, the self-taught musicians continue to weave the impressive a cappella harmonies that made their fame into their powerful live performances. These seasoned musician-singers have stayed true to their roots, drawing from gospel, soul, R&B, reggae and Chadian music. The result is as skilful and heartfelt as it is unique.

Whether its style is labeled Afro-fusion or Afro-jazz, H’SAO is defined by the strength of its voices and vocal harmonies, its rhythms and its authenticity. Onstage, the band sets itself apart through energetic performances, punctuated by catchy choreography and warm interactions with the audience. This distinctive presence was sought by prominent festivals here and abroad, such as WOMAD (New Zealand), Brisbane Festival (Australia), Queensland (Australia), Vancouver Folk Music Festival,Francofolies, Luminato (Toronto), Montreal International Jazz Festival, Nuits d’Afrique, Festival d’été de Québec, Coup de cœur francophone, Awesome Africa (Afrique du Sud), FrancoFête (Moncton). Besides touring Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas, the band made appearances at several noteworthy events. H’SAO notably played before the Queen of England on Canada Day, at the Francophonie games, with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, at Québec City’s 400th anniversary and at the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards Gala.

Ten years after the release of its self-titled album and four years after Vol 235, the band launched Oria in 2013. The level of social commitment expressed on this third album is a tribute the impressive journey that lead up to its creation. Nominated for World Music Album of the Yearat the Gala de l’ADISQ, Oria is an invitation to rediscover the boundless vocal talent of H’SAO and to experience a more subdued, masterful and varied instrumental universe. Its biting and poignant songs address peace, social justice, religion, love and other universal themes. The band will tour Canada and the United States throughout 2014 while simultaneously preparing its upcoming acoustic record.

Swedish provocateur Ruben Östlund, the director of Force Majeure, returns with The Square, one of his most audacious pieces to date and winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes. A spot-on, no-holds-barred satire of the postmodern art world, the film follows Christian (Claes Bang), the self-centred, and hopelessly befuddled curator of Sweden’s most cutting- edge art museum. Christian’s attempts to promote his exhibits are deflected by personal misfortunes and culminate with a less than successful online campaign.

The Square is full of brilliant and dazzling set pieces, including an onstage interview gone awry and a performance piece gone even more
so. Östlund refuses to score easy points, outlining the challenges that face artists trying to examine the increasingly complex and absurd world we live in and dealing with the privileged members of the audience who consider art only as a social statement or financial investment.

ROSIE & THE RIVETERS

Rosie & the Riveters are fiercely talented and sassy dames from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, who perform uplifting folk music with a vintage 1940s flair! Ask these spirited femmes to spin a slinky melody, roll out glinting harmonies, or hammer down a swinging beat, and you can bet what the answer is going to be: “We can do it!”. Their original songs feature sophisticated harmonies, body percussion, scintillating dance moves, humour, and just enough ooh-la-la to keep your toes tapping long after the show is over.

The band’s reinvention of vintage folk garnered much national attention for their debut album, Good Clean Fun!, released in 2015. It peaked at #9 on Earshot Magazine’s national folk/roots chart, and their single, Ain’t Gonna Bother, reached the #5 spot on the CBC Radio 2’s national Top 20 countdown. In 2016 they won a Saskatchewan Arts Award (Emerging Artist Category) and they also picked up nominations for a Canadian Folk Music Award (Vocal Group of the Year) and a Western Canadian Music Award (Roots Duo/Group of the Year).

Inspired by Rosie the Riveter, the feminist icon who symbolised the women’s movement into the workforce during WWII, the Riveters seek to empower women to be ambassadors for change within their own communities. In support of this vision, they invest 20% of their merchandise profits in women’s projects around the world though KIVA.org.

Since the band’s formation in 2011, the Riveters have quickly taken the folk scene by storm sharing the stage with the likes of Arlo Guthrie, Serena Ryder and Fred Penner. They have become media darlings along the way and have been featured in numerous media outlets including CTV’s ETalk Daily’s and were most recently called “one of the best live [acts] you’ll ever see” by CBC Radio 2 host, Rich Terfry. It’s easy to see why these hilarious and charming women are a force to be reckoned with!

Known for her iconic look, wild-child antics, and scandalous private life, Hedy Lamarr was revered as “the most beautiful woman in the world” in 1940s tabloids. Yet, few know her true story; an undiscovered genius, she pioneered a secret communication system intended to guide US torpedoes during WWII, which became the basis for contemporary technologies like GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi. Though she would attempt to patent the idea, the US Navy thought she was better suited to selling war bonds and entertaining troops instead. Sadly, the name
Hedy Lamarr would later only be known for the inventor’s infamous six marriages, affairs, drug use, and obsession with plastic surgery. Throughout her life, Lamarr’s face proved to be a blessing and a curse, opening one door, but halting the possibility of opening another. Produced by Susan Sarandon, the film is a trailblazing tribute to women whose contributions have gone unrecognized and an inspiration for future generations of female inventors to come.

What makes “Bombshell” intriguing is not just Lamarr’s gift for invention, it’s also what a fiery individualist she was, someone who had no regrets about her eventful life (“You learn from everything”), not even its racy, tabloid elements.

Having outdrank, outsmoked, and outlived all of his contemporaries in his off-the-map desert town, fiercely independent 90-year-old atheist Lucky (the late Harry Dean Stanton in his final role) finds himself unexpectedly thrust into a late-in-life journey of self exploration. Living alone in the blistering Arizona heat, he slopes along through life, occupying his time by walking around the dusty streets of his speck of a southwestern town. Lucky whiles away his time in a fixed routine that starts with yoga at home and breakfast at a diner, moves on to crossword puzzles and TV shows, and ends in a bar among life-worn regulars. (One of them, played by David Lynch, is grieving over the loss of his pet tortoise.) It’s never clear what Lucky has done with his life, but, with the first sign of failing health, he grows reminiscent, dredging up old regrets in gruffly sentimental monologues. Lucky makes for an incredible showcase for Stanton’s unique mastery of the wry, cantankerous wisdom that became his trademark. The film is a cinematic love letter to its legendary leading man, as well as a deeply felt meditation on mortality, loneliness, spirituality, and human connection.
