REBECCA PERRY’S Confessions of a Redheaded Coffee Shop Girl
May 13 @ 2:00 pm

Anthropology graduate Joanie Little is stuck working as a barista. Rather than let this get her down, she decides to make the most of her “underemployment”. So, much like Jane Goodall did with chimpanzees, this upbeat Miss studies her only available subjects: the eccentric customers of her coffee shop ‘jungle’. Hilarity ensues, with jazzy tunes, co-worker showdowns, life lessons and even a bit of romance. Created and developed by Toronto’s critically acclaimed solo performer, Rebecca Perry, Joanie Little brews up a comedic storm that you won’t want to miss! Confessions of a Redheaded Coffeeshop Girl is the internationally successful show for anyone who has ever had a job they didn’t like.

  • “Impeccable comic timing and faultless delivery. Perry is an animated and engaging performer.” – ★★★★★ – The Nouse UK
  • “Clever, amusing and wonderfully executed… I would highly recommend you see it.” – Arts Award Voice
  • “Her comedic timing is spot on, her acting is superb as she slips in and out of characters, and her singing is pitch perfect. The description for the show says that it’s suitable for ages 9-99 and I think that’s true.” – Mooney on Theatre
  • “Loved every minute of Rebecca Perry’s “Confessions of a Redheaded Coffeeshop Girl.” What a talented, generous artist. And, what pipes! Even bought the CD.” – NNNN – Glenn Sumi, NOW Magazine
  • This is solo show performance at its best, with Perry rolling out a cast of characters in Joanie’s world like a wild kingdom field guide. I dare you not to fall in love with Joanie Little – and, by extension, Rebecca Perry.” – Life With More Cowbell

RAWLINS CROSS
May 19 @ 7:30 pm

Rawlins Cross, one of Canada’s most accomplished and beloved Celtic bands, was formed in St. John’s in the late 1980s by songwriting brothers Dave Panting (guitar and mandolin) and Geoff Panting (keyboards and accordion) and Ian McKinnon (highland pipes and tin whistle). Since then, Rawlins Cross has been at the vanguard of the fusion of Celtic traditional music with the rhythms of rock, pop and worldbeat music. Equally at ease with a soulful Highland Air (MacPherson’s Lament) or a raucous party song (Colleen, Reel ‘n’ Roll, Rock Steady), Rawlins Cross never fails to electrify its faithful fans. Over its nearly 30 year run, Rawlins Cross has always been a “fan favourite” on the North American and European concert and festival circuits.

The band burst onto the East Coast recording scene in late ’89 with its first indie recording, A Turn of the Wheel and a video for the single Colleen. Just weeks after its release, Colleen scored a top ten radio slot on Toronto’s influential CFNY station and Rawlins Cross was on its way.

In 1992, the band released Crossing The Border, which further developed the ground-breaking fusion of highland bagpipes, mandolin and accordion with a rocking rhythm section. A year later the band recorded Reel ‘n’ Roll, which would prove to be its best-selling commercial success and launch a national radio hit with the title track. With the solid rhythm section of Halifax bassist Brian Bourne and Ontario-based drummer Howie Southwood, Rawlins Cross enlisted PEI singer Joey Kitson to complete its signature sound.

Already one of the top concert draws in the region, and with a growing fanbase across Canada and in Europe, Rawlins Cross released Living River in 1995, which garnered two Juno Award nominations. The band toured Canada three times that year and signed a licensing deal for its music in Europe.

During that period Rawlins Cross performed live on the nationally-televised East Coast Music Awards before an audience of two million viewers.

The band expanded its international audience by headlining the 9th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Festival in Germany and also representing Canada at the Expo Cumbre de las Americas in Santiago, Chile.

Two more albums followed: Celtic Instrumentals in 1997, a retrospective collection and the studio album Make It On Time, which would prove to be the band’s last album for more than a decade. With total album sales topping 100,000 units, Rawlins Cross has been one of the region’s most successful bands.

In 2008 Rawlins Cross reunited after a several year hiatus and released Anthology, a compilation of its best recorded songs. In Fall 2010, the band released Heart Head Hands (GroundSwell/ Warner Music). This marked the band’s first full album release in 12 years. Around that time, the band performed for Queen Elizabeth II at a large outdoor event in Halifax.

Rawlins Cross, has, again, rekindled their magic with their six-track EP, Rock Steady, released December 1st, 2017 through GroundSwell Music. Rock Steady was co-produced by Jon Landry and Geoff Panting. This collection of new songs along with a string of successful festival performances, has added some spring to the step of this venerable East Coast act.

In 2008, Hollywood Director Ron Howard cast Jay to play Neil Diamond in the Academy Award nominated film “Frost/Nixon”. In 2011, Jay was cast as Diamond in the musical drama film “Beautiful Noise”.

In 1996 and 2002, White met Diamond before his Vegas MGM appearances, where Neil told Jay to “keep singing, so I can stay home and relax! Your friend in music”.

XARA Choral Theatre: RISE
Jun 3 @ 2:00 pm

Xara Choral Theatre invites you to celebrate ten years of choral innovation and the fiercely talented performers who have helped them make their mark, along with the stories that have inspired the work.

RISE is a collection of four short pieces of choral theatre. Each explores what it means to be a woman searching for agency and fighting for change while trying to honour her elders and her past.

The ensemble will be joined by Xara alumnae, several young singers from our Chrysalis Youth Mentorship program, and guest artists Rebecca Thomas, and Michelle Raine. Each section of the show has been collaboratively developed with the featured artist and will include a re-imagined Greek myth, slam poetry, and vulnerable monologue. Music will vary from new works by Canadians Don Macdonald and Kim Baryluk to music by Finnish, Tamilian, and African-American composers.

The narratives that come alive through this show celebrate, affirm, challenge, and mourn the unique roles women play in our culture. It may leave you with new perspectives on the many ways of being a woman, a protector, and a bearer of history.

THERESA MALENFANT & JOHN CAMPBELLJOHN
Jun 9 @ 7:30 pm

CELEBRATE THE BLUES WITH LEGENDS THERESA MALENFANT & JOHN CAMPBELLJOHN!

Hailing from Dieppe, NB, Theresa Malenfant grew up surrounded by a musically-talented family. She made her singing debut at the age of fourteen and was soon on stage, dueting with the great Dutch Mason. After many years of success, both in her native Canada and during a five year stint living and performing in Europe, Malenfant has a number of critically acclaimed albums to her credit and 30 years of performing under her belt. The vocal powerhouse in the tradition of Janis Joplin and Etta James has amassed an incredible career, one that has shown no signs of slowing down.

John Campbelljohn’s acoustic blues performances he makes the most of the song. Campbelljohn soulfully commands the stage with rich vocals, while his powerfully prolific technique on guitar or trusty dobro lap steel further embellishes each composition. His power trio ups the ante with an electric sound that can pummel an audience into submission or captivate them with the subtleties of ace musicians driven solely by the love of their craft.

A tight rhythm section fronted by Campbelljohn’s distinctive prowess on slide guitar quickly demonstrates that, although John’s a Cape Bretoner, he’s been cut from a plaid of a very different color. Power blues that touch on rock, reggae and roots with a few overtones of pure country – these are John Campbelljohn’s stock and trade. He’s also added the wondrous sounds of the pedal steel to his live band shows to haunting effect. The overall quality of the musicianship, the energy of his delivery and the guaranteed good times that spring from the band’s performances are proof of the pudding.

Acoustically, John combines the influences of such diverse players as Fred McDowell, Ry Cooder and John Hammond while his electric shows earmark everyone from Sonny Landreth to Johnny Winter, Clapton to Duane Allman. A simple listen to any of his six CD releases tell the tale that John Campbelljohn – solo or otherwise – is a born performer and a credit to his accomplishments: Blues Artist of the Year, Guitarist of the Year, Slide Guitarist of the Year. His is a sophisticated, well-informed and progressive definition of the blues and his distinctive edge has been applauded from Sydney to Stuttgart. Treat yourself to something truly fan-friendly and fun with a no-nonsense master of many genres.

Mozart’s COSI FAN TUTTE – Met Opera
Jun 10 @ 2:00 pm

A winning cast comes together for Phelim McDermott’s clever vision of Mozart’s comedy about the sexes, set in a carnival-esque, funhouse environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island—complete with bearded ladies, fire eaters, and a Ferris wheel. Manipulating the action are the Don Alfonso of Christopher Maltman and the Despina of Tony Award–winner Kelli O’Hara, with Amanda Majeski, Serena Malfi, Ben Bliss, and Adam Plachetka as the pairs of young lovers who test each other’s faithfulness. David Robertson conducts.

  • Estimated Run Time: 3 hrs 20 mins
  • Sung In Italian, Met Titles In English

Premiere: Vienna, Court Theater, 1790. The third and final collaboration between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte is a fascinating paradox: a frothy comedy of manners with an intensely dark take on human nature; an old story (it has antecedents in Boccaccio, Shakespeare, and Cervantes, among others) with a startlingly modern tone; and a beautiful score depicting questionable behavior. Così fan tutte was only moderately successful at its premiere and remained just outside the standard repertoire for more than a century. Così still poses unique challenges, and correspondingly unique rewards, for the public today. Every possible impression of love—from the loftiest to the basest—is explored in this extraordinary opera.

Maritime Concert Opera: LA BOHEME
Jun 21 @ 7:30 pm

We are pleased to welcome the Maritime Concert Opera back to King’s Theatre. MCO is a semi-professional regional opera company based in Lunenburg which brings in-concert performances of great operas to many communities in Nova Scotia. While they use professional soloists, their chorus and ethos are rooted firmly in their communities. A concert opera brings you all the gorgeous singing of complete operatic works, in the original language, without the staging, sets or costumes.

La Bohème opens your soul to emotions too big for words. The music swells with love, soars in ecstasy, crackles with jealousy and cries with heartache…

The composer Giacomo Puccini created the opera La Bohème in 1896, a four-act opera that premiered on February 1, 1896, in Teatro Regio, Turin. The setting of La Bohème takes place in 1830s Paris, France. The opera is based on a collection of related stories by Henri Murger published in 1851 and follows the standard Italian opera format as a very popular performance across the world. The story shows vignettes of bohemian youths who lived in the Latin Quarter of Paris and focuses on relationships, characters, and lovers.

Artistic Director Nina Scott-Stoddart is a professional mezzo-soprano who has sung across Canada, the United States and in New Zealand. Founder of Toronto-based Opera Anonymous, she oversaw over 20 productions from 1994 to 2002. Nina and her husband moved to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in 2002, and has since overseen 18 full operas and a total of 34  concerts with MCO.  In 2005 she and Tara Scott founded the Halifax Summer Opera Workshop which has just completed a very successful tenth season.

PAUL O’BRIEN
Jun 30 @ 7:30 pm

Join us at King’s Theatre for the launch of Paul O’Brien’s new CD, recorded in Nova Scotia and produced by JP Cormier.

Paul O’Brien is a UK-born singer-songwriter-instrumentalist based in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, who spends his winters touring Europe. He has a gift for going straight to the emotional heart of the story and taking his listeners with him. The music has a new Celtic feel, songs that are steeped in the acoustic tradition but retain a freshness and relevance, songs that will touch your heart, songs about real people and situations, songs you can remember.

Here’s a sneak preview of some tracks off his new CD!

“A working class poet with a knack for straightforward language held aloft by a sweet gift of melody.” – Boulevard Magazine

”Paul O’Brien is a modern day poet, a guardian of our history. He knows how to tell us, easily and gracefully stories that are serious, romantic, personal by turns; about love and nature and . . . well, life!”  – Marc Phillip, Magazine Audio

“The moment of listening has that feeling of being something special and rare. Paul has a perfect voice for his subjects, strong, warm and able to create a sense of intimacy with his listener. He calls us to action with songs that ring like anthems and makes us cry with reminders of social injustice.” Sheryl McKay, CBC Radio Two

O’Brien wrote and recorded two CDs of original songs, both produced by the Grammy Award winning / Juno Award nominee Joby Baker: Sacred Lines (2006) and Plastic (2008). Both were met with overwhelmingly positive response; Plastic
was included in prominent Top Ten Albums of 2008 lists published by Penguin Eggs Folk Magazine, BBC Radio (Folk Roots), and CBC Radio.

Signed to Stockfisch Records, a prestigious German label, and has recorded several albums with Günter Pauler (well known in Europe and elsewhere for his work with The Fureys and Davey Arthur, Dick Gaughan, Delores Keane, Mike Silver, and others). “Walk Back Home” was released in 2009, followed by “Live at Stockfisch Studio” and “Long May You Sing” (both 2013), the latter of which featured acclaimed Canadian guitarist Don Ross with O’Brien.

Eager to learn more and experience more diversity, O’Brien relocated from the West Coast to the East Coast of Canada in the summer of 2017. He moved to the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia, a province with an incredibly rich tradition of music and musicians. O’Brien is already immersed in his new community and excited to explore music on Canada’s East Coast.

O’Brien is a songwriter with deep roots and broad horizons, and he is included in the long tradition of folk/ roots artists everywhere as a teacher of the guitar, mandolin and bodhran, the traditional Irish drum. Since the beginning of his career, his influences have been diverse – everything from new English folk to Reggae. He has developed an eclectic folk style that is broadly appealing and not easily categorized. His experiences as an immigrant, musician, and teacher; his natural instinct for humour and storytelling; and his empathy for the underdog have all combined to produce an insightful and entertaining artist. Paul O’Brien’s concerts are dynamic affairs, and his connection with the audience is palpable. No room is too large or too small for him. In the space of one song, he can take his audiences from foot stomping energy to the absolute stillness of choked-back tears.
