About the Nutcracker

Clara is given an enchanted Nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. As midnight strikes, she creeps downstairs to find a magical adventure awaiting her and her Nutcracker.

The magician Drosselmeyer transforms the drawing room for a battle between mice and toy soldiers. During the battle, Clara saves the Nutcracker’s life – so breaking a magical spell that turned him from a boy to a toy – and the Mouse King is defeated. In celebration, Drosselmeyer sweeps Clara and the Nutcracker off to the Kingdom of Sweets, where they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy and take part in a wonderful display of dances. The next morning, Clara’s adventures seem to have been more than just a dream.

MOZART’S THE MAGIC FLUTE – Met Opera (Julie Taymor production)
Jan 19 @ 2:00 pm

Julie Taymor’s beloved production of Mozart’s enchanting fairy tale returns in its abridged, English-language version for families. Baritone Nathan Gunn is the comic birdcatcher Papageno, and soprano Kathryn Lewek reprises her hair-raising rendition of the malevolent Queen of the Night. Harry Bicket conducts.

Shelley Marshall’s HOLD MOMMY’S CIGARETTE
Mar 10 @ 2:00 pm

This is a stunning story of an unfiltered life, written and performed by Shelley Marshall, directed by Linda Kash. It took 10 years for Hamilton-born Marshall to create the work, the worthwhile result of resilience, recovery, and reflection while exploring many the genres of performance; clown, stand-up, improv, buffoon, and play.

For the past five years, old Mommy’s Cigarette has been a sell-out success in theatres in Toronto and surrounding cities, receiving Gold in the category of “Best Theatre Production” in 2013, “Best New Discovery” by Now Magazine, and nominated “Best Female Stand Up” in Canada by the Canadian Comedy Awards. Marshall has hosted the popular, televised Hamilton Music Awards for the past four years. In light of the national acclaim she has garnered, what makes Hold Mommy’s Cigarette such a success to Shelley personally is the attention it has contributed in raising mental health awareness. “I knew creating works of art that expressed my experience, my truth, and my understanding, were what would bring a joyful purpose to my life. I feel I not only have an opportunity, but an obligation, to convey a message that can help people heal.” Quickly blazing an uncharted trail, this comedic icon won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Marshall, who has recently settled in Bear River, Nova Scotia, invites you to come to her show with an open mind and promises you’ll leave with a full heart.

BIZET’S CARMEN – Met Opera
Mar 16 @ 2:00 pm

Mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine reprises her remarkable portrayal of opera’s ultimate seductress, a triumph in her 2017 debut performances, with impassioned tenors Yonghoon Lee and Roberto Alagna as her lover, Don José. Omer Meir Wellber and Louis Langrée share conducting duties for Sir Richard Eyre’s powerful production, a Met favorite since its 2009 premiere.

The opera takes place in and around Seville, a city that, by the time Carmen was written, had already served many operatic composers as an exotic setting conducive to erotic intrigues and turmoil (Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Verdi’s La Forza del Destino, among others). The hometown of Don Juan, the city also inspired Mozart with Don Giovanni, and Beethoven used Seville as the setting for a study of marital fidelity in Fidelio.
